The following is a list of fictional characters that have appeared in the main "Resident Evil" series. The main series is comprised of "Resident Evil", "Resident Evil 2", ', ', "Resident Evil Zero", "Resident Evil 4" , "" and "Resident Evil 5".

Main characters

Chris Redfield

Chris Redfield first appears in the original "Resident Evil" as one of two playable protagonists. In the game, he is a member of STARS' Alpha team, sent to investigate the disappearance of their compatriots. The squad discovers the remains of Bravo team's helicopter, but shortly encounter a pack of undead dogs. Chris, accompanied by Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine, [ The surviving members of Alpha team depend on the player's scenario.] seek refuge in the nearby mansion, which is filled with deadly traps and horrific monsters. Chris' scenario is more challenging than Jill's, as he has a more limited carrying capacity, and lacks certain items, such as a lockpick and grenade launcher. [Casamassina, Matt. Chris returns in "" as the protagonist of the second portion of the game, where he attempts to rescue his younger sister, Claire, from a secret Umbrella Corporation facility in Antarctica. While there, he confronts Alexia Ashford, the creator of the T-Veronica Virus, and Wesker.

In this latest installment, it has been revealed that he has joined an anti-BOW organization, the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA). Chris was voiced by Michael Filipowich in "Resident Evil Code: Veronica", and Joe Whyte in the 2002 remake of "Resident Evil".

Jill Valentine

in the original "Resident Evil". Along with Chris Redfield, she is a member of STARS' Alpha team, deployed to the Arklay Mountains. Alpha team is attacked by several undead dogs, and retreats to the Arklay Research Facility. Jill initially works with Barry Burton, as they inspect the mansion and discover its undead residents.

Jill returns as the sole protagonist in "Resident Evil 3". She fights alongside Carlos Oliveira, a UBCS soldier who is attempting to escape Raccoon City. Jill encounters Nemesis, a super soldier created by the Umbrella Corporation. She survives the incident, and appears in ' where she works with Chris Redfield to expose and destroy the Umbrella Corporation. She also appears as a character in the game "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" and in the live action film ', portrayed by Sienna Guillory.

Albert Wesker

Albert Wesker made his first appearance as the primary antagonist in the original "Resident Evil" as the commander of the fictional STARS and leader of the Alpha team. He appears through the course of the game as a non-playable character assisting the protagonist. As the player goes further into the game, evidence begins to appear in the mansion's underground laboratory implicating Wesker as a member of the Umbrella research staff. Wesker eventually reveals that he was ordered by his superiors at Umbrella to lure the STARS into the mansion, using them as test subjects against the mutated creatures to gather battle data. He is either seemingly killed by the Tyrant creature he unleashes before the final battle; or found dead at the lab's control room next to a self-destruct mechanism.

His next appearance was in "", where he appears as an agent working for an unnamed secret organization against Umbrella. He reveals in the fictional documentary, "Wesker's Report", that he survived his apparent death in the first game by injecting himself beforehand with an experimental virus provided by his former colleague William Birkin. The virus brought him back to life, augmenting him with superhuman strength and agility. He appears through the latter half of "Code: Veronica" confronting his former subordinate, Chris Redfield and the game's antagonist, Alexia Ashford.

Wesker then appears in "Resident Evil Zero" and "Resident Evil 4" as a conspirator manipulating events from behind the scenes. He is a central character in "", where he appears as a playable character in several of the game's scenarios, expanding upon events alluded to in early games, as well as his involvement in Umbrella's downfall after the events of "Code: Veronica" and his development in "Resident Evil 4". Wesker is voiced by Richard Waugh in "Resident Evil Code: Veronica", "Resident Evil 4", and "Resident Evil Zero"; and Peter Jessop voices the character in the remake of "Resident Evil". Wesker's character was adapted by Sony Pictures for the 2007 film "". Played by Jason O'Mara, this version of Wesker is the head of the Umbrella Corporation. He runs Umbrella's operations from behind the scenes, holding meetings via hologram with his underground board of directors in undisclosed locations around the world.

Leon S. Kennedy

Leon Scott Kennedy is one of the two protagonists in "Resident Evil 2". Leon is a recently-hired police officer for the Raccoon Police Department. He arrives late to Raccoon City and finds the town already overrun by zombies. He works with Claire Redfield and attempts to escape the city alive. He maintains radio contact with Claire and is partnered with Ada Wong, a woman claiming to be looking for her missing boyfriend. His attempt to find an escape route leads him to Umbrella's underground laboratory, where he confronts several of Umbrella's mutant creatures.

The epilogues of "Resident Evil 3" reveals that Leon made an undisclosed deal with a representative of the US government for Sherry's safety. In "" and "Code: Veronica" Leon has joined an anti-Umbrella force. In "Survivor", he is the one who sent the game's protagonist, Ark Thompson, to Sheena Island. In "Code: Veronica", Claire gets in touch with Leon when she is trapped on Rockfort Island, and Leon relays her whereabouts to Chris Redfield.

Leon returns as the protagonist of "Resident Evil 4". He has become an agent for the US government, and is assigned to rescue the newly-elected President's daughter, Ashley Graham, who is being held somewhere in Europe. Her kidnappers turn out to be part of a cult known as Los Illuminados, [Jeremy Parish, "LEON KENNEDY," "Electronic Gaming Monthly" 224 (January 2008), 101.] which has taken control of the local villagers with parasites known as Las Plagas. Leon teams up once again with Ada Wong, and Luis Sera, a former researcher for Osmund Saddler, the cult leader. Leon is voiced by Paul Haddad in "Resident Evil 2", and Paul Mercier in "Resident Evil 4" and the film "".

Claire Redfield

Claire Redfield first appears in "Resident Evil 2", which revolves around her search for her missing brother. She arrives in Raccoon City to find the town being overrun by zombies. Claire meets up with Leon Kennedy, but along the way she is separated from him. The rest of the game focuses on Claire's attempt to escape from the city alive. She maintains radio contact with Leon and teams up with a young girl named Sherry, while fighting against the various creatures infesting the precinct, including a mutated William Birkin. In the aftermath of the game, Claire escapes from the lab along with Leon and Sherry and eventually the three of them manage to destroy the mutated Birkin. As revealed in the epilogue of "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis", Claire left the city by herself in order to continue her search for Chris, while Leon and Sherry were retrieved by the US military.

In "Code: Veronica", Claire is the protagonist for the first portion of the game. After an unsuccessful infiltration of Umbrella's medical branch in Paris, Claire finds herself imprisoned on Rockfort Island. She escapes and teams up with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside following another viral outbreak, this time caused by a rival corporation of Umbrella's. During the escape, she manages to send a message to Leon Kennedy, telling him to get help from Chris. The pair escape from the island, only to find themselves in another of Umbrella's secret labs, this time in Antarctica, before they are taken captive by Alexia Ashford. The second half of the game follows Chris trying to save his captured sister from Umbrella. He finds his way into the Antarctic lab and rescues a captive Claire before the final battle with Alexia. The siblings escape from the facility via jet during the game's ending and they vow to put an end to the Umbrella Corporation's activities. Claire is voiced by Alyson Court.

Claire also appeared in the live action film "Resident Evil Extinction", portrayed by actress Ali Larter.

Rebecca Chambers

Rebecca Chambers is a rookie member of STARS' Bravo team, who is in charge of rear security, and serves as the team's medic. She was portrayed by an actress credited as "Linda" in the live-action segments of the first "Resident Evil", Hope Levy in the GameCube remake, Riva DiPaola in "Resident Evil Zero", [cite web|url=http://voice123.com/rivadipaola|title=Riva Di Paola - Girl Next Door, Raw & Sexy, Fun Teen, Geeky Child - Riva Di Paola at Voice123] and by Stephanie Sheh in "Umbrella Chronicles". Rebecca makes her first appearance in the original "Resident Evil", as a supporting character who assists Chris Redfield. [ [http://stars.ign.com/objects/962/962173.html Rebecca Chambers Profile] ] She arrives at the Arklay Research Facility before the STARS Alpha team, after her unit is scattered across the Arklay Mountains. Rebecca is one of the main protagonists in "Resident Evil Zero", which serves as a prequel to "Resident Evil". In the game, Rebecca stumbles aboard the Ecliptic Express while investigating a series of murders within the Arklay Mountains. She encounters a convicted ex-marine, Billy Coen, who helps her. The two discover that the attacks have been masterminded by James Marcus, formerly one of the Umbrella Corporation's top scientists, who has reanimated himself to kill his murderers. Rebecca also appears in "The Umbrella Chronicles", which summarizes the events of "Resident Evil Zero" and also appears in two chapters, which detail her experiences between "Resident Evil Zero" and the first "Resident Evil". The chapters pair her off with Richard Aiken, as they work together to fend off hordes of undead creatures on the mansion's estate.

Ada Wong

Ada Wong is first mentioned in the first "Resident Evil", in a letter written by dying researcher, named John. She makes her first actual appearance in "Resident Evil 2", secretly working as spy ordered to recover a sample of the G-Virus. Ada poses as an innocent bystander, who is searching for her missing boyfriend, when she meets Leon Kennedy. Her secret agenda is exposed, but she is mortally wounded. An epilogue in "Resident Evil 3", as well as a fictional documentary in "Code: Veronica" confirm that Ada survived the ordeal. "The Umbrella Chronicles" later retell the specific accounts of her survival.

Her next major appearance was in "Resident Evil 4", where she assists Leon in his mission to rescue the new President's daughter Ashley Graham, although her true objective is to obtain a sample of the "Las Plagas" parasites for Wesker. The original GameCube version featured Ada as a playable character in the sub-scenario "Assignment: Ada", as well as in the "Mercenaries" minigame. A new scenario starring Ada, titled "Separate Ways", was added to all subsequent ports, which depicts the events of the main game from Ada's perspective, as well as a fictional documentary titled "Ada's Report", where she describes her involvement with other characters in the story. Ada is voiced by Sally Cahill in "Resident Evil 2" and "Resident Evil 4".

Barry Burton

Barry Burton is the primary supporting character in Jill's story in the original "Resident Evil". He only appears in Chris' story during the opening cut scene. During the course of the game, he is blackmailed by Albert Wesker to do his bidding. Umbrella has his family captive and threatens their lives if Barry refuses to carry out a task. Depending on the player's choice, he is either killed by a monster, or survives and assists Jill during the final act of the game. Canonically, Burton survives and is mentioned in subsequent games. He makes a cameo in one of the alternate endings of "Resident Evil 3", where he helps Jill and Carlos escape from Raccoon City before its destruction and appears in "Resident Evil Gaiden".

Billy Coen

Billy Coen is first mentioned in a police report filed by Rebecca Chambers in the Nintendo 64 version of "Resident Evil 2", foreshadowing the events of the then-unreleased prequel ("Zero" was originally planned as a Nintendo 64 game before development shifted to the GameCubeFact|date=August 2008). A former marine, Billy is sentenced to death for murdering 23 people, but manages to escape from a military transport vehicle en route to his execution. He seeks refuge in the Ecliptic Express, a stranded train, where he meets Rebecca Chambers. The two form an alliance in order to survive. Both characters are monitored by James Marcus, who sends various creatures to subdue them. Throughout "Resident Evil Zero", Billy never states what he did to merit his court martial. Billy and Rebecca eventually meet Marcus towards the latter portion of the game. After revealing the details of his demise, Marcus mutates into a Queen Leech. In the final battle sequence, Billy and Rebecca subdue the queen leech by exploiting its vulnerability to sunlight. Rebecca allows Billy to escape, telling the authorities that he subsequently perished in the Arklay Mountains after their encounter. Billy reprises his role in "Umbrella Chronicles" for the Wii. Carlos Oliveira

Originally from a South American anti-government guerrilla group, his nationality is unknown, though he does have Native American ancestry. After government forces wiped out his former organization, Carlos was scouted out by the Umbrella Corporation to join the U.B.C.S. He joined and was assigned to Delta Platoon, Company A, along with Nicholai Ginovaef and .

In "Resident Evil 3", Carlos assists Jill Valentine throughout the game as the two of them attempt to escape Raccoon City. At one point Jill becomes infected by the T-Virus after a battle with the Nemesis. At this point Carlos becomes playable so that the player can prepare a vaccine for Jill. Ultimately he is successful in escaping the city along with Jill.

The events of "Resident Evil 3" are revisited in "The Umbrella Chronicles" scenario "Raccoon's Destruction", in which Carlos is a playable character alongside Jill Valentine. Carlos is voiced by Vincent Corazza in "Resident Evil 3".

In 2004, Carlos appears in ' and he also appears in the sequel, '. He is portrayed by Oded Fehr.

heva Alomar

Sheva Alomar is one of the main characters in "Resident Evil 5". She is of African origin, and aids Chris.

William Birkin

William Birkin made his debut as the main antagonist of "Resident Evil 2". After completing his G-Virus project, he is mortally wounded by agents of the Umbrella Special Forces after his work is stolen. Left for dead, he injects himself with the G-Virus , thus turning himself into a monster, he then kills his attackers, causing a T-Virus vial to be leaked into the city's drainage system, resulting in the zombie outbreak in the game. During the course of the game, he encounters the main characters: Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, as he undergoes gradual mutation and begins losing any semblance of his original human form. He is eventually destroyed by Leon and Claire, with the help of his daughter Sherry.

Birkin is mentioned in "Wesker's Report" as the scientist who helped Wesker fake his death and is retroactively mentioned in the GameCube version of the first "Resident Evil". Birkin also makes appearance in "Resident Evil Zero", where he assists Wesker from behind the scenes, and also appears in a cutscene in "The Umbrella Chronicles" along with Albert Wesker. In the first "Resident Evil" film, William Birkin makes an uncredited cameo appearance as the head of the Nemesis project and is portrayed by actor Jason Isaacs, who was also the film's narrator. According to a commentary by Paul W.S. Anderson, Isaacs was planned to reprise this role in the sequel "Resident Evil: Apocalypse", but left the project for undisclosed reasons. An original character named Dr. Sam Isaacs (played by Iain Glen and named after the actor who played Birkin in the first filmFact|date=July 2008) was created to fulfill Birkin's role in the sequel.

James Marcus

James Marcus is one of the founders of Umbrella and the main antagonist of "Resident Evil Zero". Years before the events of the first "Resident Evil", Marcus, along with Ozwell E. Spencer, was one of the founders of the Umbrella Corporation. In his personal journal, Marcus notes that he played an integral role in developing the T-Virus through extensive research with leeches; however, Spencer betrays Marcus by sending his subordinates, Albert Wesker and William Birkin, to murder Marcus and steal his research. Minor characters

TARS

The Special Tactics And Rescue Service is a law-enforcing task force belonging to the Raccoon Police Department. They serve as the central characters of the original "Resident Evil". The members of Bravo team appear in "Resident Evil Zero".

Alpha team

Alpha team is sent in to investigate the disappearance of Bravo team. The mission to find their missing comrades soon turns into a nightmare.

Joseph Frost

A member of Alpha team killed by Cerberus dogs after he discovers the body of Kevin Dooley during the introductory sequence of the first "Resident Evil". He is the team's resident vehicle expert.

Brad Vickers

Alpha team's helicopter pilot, who leaves his teammates stranded in the forest during the opening of the first "Resident Evil". He later returns during the game's final battle. In "Resident Evil 3", Brad is targeted by the Nemesis, who eventually kills him.

Brad appears in "Resident Evil 2" as a hidden enemy. He makes a small cameo in "The Umbrella Chronicles" segment "The Mansion Incident" and was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch.

Bravo team

Richard Aiken

Richard Aiken is a member of Bravo team whom the player meets in the original "Resident Evil" after he has sustained a wound from Yawn. In the original PlayStation version, Richard dies even if the serum is delivered to him on time. In the GameCube version, he has a more prominent role, either helping Jill Valentine fight Yawn or warning Chris Redfield about Neptune, before falling victim to one of them.

In "The Umbrella Chronicles", Richard is a prominent character in the sub-scenario "Nightmare". He is Bravo team's communications officer. He is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.

Enrico Marini

Enrico Marini is Bravo team's mission leader and second in command of STARS. He leads Bravo team prior to the events of "Resident Evil" (as depicted in "Resident Evil Zero"), eventually leading his team to the Arklay Research Facility. A wounded Enrico encounters the player's character during the first game, but is killed before revealing the identity of the STARS traitor.

Edward Dewey

A member of Bravo team who was listed as the team's helicopter pilot. He makes an appearance in "Resident Evil Zero" as Bravo team's co-pilot. Edward is killed off early in the game after being fatally wounded by the infected dogs.

Forrest Speyer

Bravo team's marksman. He is found dead after being fatally attacked by crows. In "Resident Evil: Director's Cut", as well as in the later GameCube and Nintendo DS versions, Forrest's corpse turns into a zombie and attacks the player.

He also appears in "The Umbrella Chronicles" in a cameo as a zombie.

Kenneth J. Sullivan

The first casualty of Bravo team whom the player encounters in "Resident Evil". The player finds his body being devoured by a zombie. He is Bravo Team's field biologist.

Kevin Dooley

He is identified as Bravo team's helicopter pilot in the GameCube version of "Resident Evil", where his corpse is found by the members of Alpha team during the opening intro. As seen in "Resident Evil Zero", Kevin stayed behind to secure the helicopter after it suffered an engine breakdown and was killed sometime between the two games.

Unseen characters

Ozwell E. Spencer

Ozwell E. Spencer is one of "Resident Evil's" most important and mysterious side characters. In the series, he is the owner and founder of the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical company that secretly manufactures bio-organic weapons.Alexander Ashford: My father, Edward, discovered the mother virus in cooperation with Lord Spencer, who was also a nobleman. They studied it for the purpose of military use. Eventually, Ashford dies, and Spencer seizes control of the company and its research by sending his subordinates, Albert Wesker and William Birkin, to assassinate Marcus. Spencer conducts some of his company’s research in the Arklay Research Facility, in the Arklay Mountains. He originally hired George Trevor, a famed architect to construct the mansion, but soon became paranoid that Trevor knew too much about the mansion’s secrets. Spencer’s plans progress smoothly, until Marcus returns from the dead, [James Marcus: However, something wondrous happened, it took the T-Virus inside of my queen years to procreate my new life. Marcus destroys one of Spencer’s luxury trains, and causes a viral outbreak in the Arklay Research Facility. After the city's destruction, Spencer attempts to disguise the incident as a government conspiracy by hiring top lawyers and false witnesses. His actions prolong the legal proceedings, and allows the Umbrella Corporation to stay afloat for five more years. George Trevor

George, a well-known architect from New York, was hired to design the Spencer Mansion in the Arklay Mountains. George Trevor's story was originally told in a promotional source book released in Japan titled "The True Story Behind Biohazard", which contained a journal of Trevor's involvement in the mansion incident and his eventual fate. A revised version of his diary was included in the 2002 GameCube remake of the original "Resident Evil".

Long before the events of "Resident Evil", Ozwell E. Spencer hires Trevor to design and build a mansion in the Arklay Mountains. Trevor, a famed architect from New York, agrees to take up the project. Near the mansion’s completion, Trevor notices that numerous traps and structures were added to the mansion, including an underground laboratory. Spencer eventually caught wind of Trevor’s discovery, and devises a plan to eliminate him. Trevor eventually left the mansion sometime in the late 1960s, and began working on other assignments. Spencer invites Trevor’s wife and daughter, Jessica and Lisa Trevor, to the mansion for a vacation. Spencer and his henchmen capture the two, and use their absence to lure Trevor back to the mansion. He becomes suspicious of Spencer, and makes numerous attempts to leave the mansion. Spencer caught Trevor and seals him in a vault, using his family as human guinea pigs for the Umbrella Corporation.

In the Nintendo GameCube remake of "Resident Evil", the player can read Trevor’s journal and notes, which reveals his declining relationship with Spencer. Additionally, one is able to visit his final resting place by solving a puzzle in the art room. The player also encounters Trevor’s daughter, Lisa, who is portrayed as a deranged mutant. Jessica’s remains are found during the latter portion of the game. Logs and notes pertaining to his family's experimentations are scattered throughout the game, and mentioned in the fictional documentary, Wesker's Report.
