Following a season at
Notre Dame de Grace , Burns went on to play 3 years with theMontreal Junior Canadiens and another two with the Houston Apollos of the CHL.cite web |url=http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=687 |title=Stats of Rin Burns |accessdate=2008-05-29 |publisher=The Internet Hockey Database] After spending a season with theMontreal Voyageurs of the AHL, Burns was traded from theMontreal Canadiens to thePittsburgh Penguins for cash in 1970. Most of his time with the Penguins was spent with the AHL'sHershey Bears , whom he helped lead to the 1974Calder Cup by recording 10 goals and 14 points in 14 playoff gamescite web |url=http://www.legendsofhockey.net/html/silver_splashcaldercup.htm |title=Clader Cup Info and Champions |accessdate=2008-05-29] . In June 1974, Burns was claimed by theKansas City Scouts in the expansion draft. He posted his best seasons with the Scouts but was phased out as the team rebuilt for their move to Colorado.
