Villierstown

Villierstown

Villierstown ("An Baile Nua" in Irish) is a small village on the banks of the River Blackwater in west County Waterford, Ireland. The village of Villierstown leads into the Dromana Estate, the Irish translation of which is Drom-Nua or New Ridge. The name Baile Nua simply means New Settlement.

Vilerstown was founded by the Villiers-Stuart family where the name derived from. It was once set up as a settlement for the family of the workers who worked on the Dromana estate. Villierstown primarily was a linen making industrial town until the 19th century. At present it has developed its industries and population is now increasing.

Villierstown previously had many businesses but after the closure of the only shop in 2000, residents were forced to travel 2 miles to a shop, a new shop has since been opened in the town.
