Sheikh Ali Ahmed Mulla ( _ar. على أحمد ملا) is the
veteran muezzin (caller to prayer) at theMasjid al-Haram inMecca ,Saudi Arabia . Ali Ahmed is up to date the longest servingmuezzin for theMasjid al-Haram and has been following hisfamily tradition in this nobleprofession for over 31 years. Ahmed Mulla was born in October 1961, to religious parents of the Mulla
family , and fathered by the son of Abdul Rahman Mulla, one of the most famousmuezzin s then. As he grew he was known for his good morals, goodvoice in addition to hisislamic education , which he received from an earlyage . He has said in interviews that he frequently accompanied Abdul Hafeez Khoja and Abdul Rahman Mulla to theMasjid al-Haram , all of whom werenotable muezzin s of theirera .Family life
Mulla got married in his early thirties, and currently has a few sons, the eldest of them Atef Ahmed Mulla who he hopes will also become a
muezzin at themosque one day.Career
Sheikh Ali Ahmad Mulla became one of the luckiest
muezzin s as he began performingadhan at themosque when he was just 14, calling forprayer from theminaret s in the absence of Abdul Hafeez Khoja, his maternaluncle , Abdul Rahman Mulla, his paternaluncle , and Ahmad Mulla, hisgrandfather , who were allmuezzin s at the mosque. Mulla began performing before the introduction ofloudspeaker s, whenmuezzin s stood at each of the sevenminaret s such as the Bab Al-Umrah Minaret, Bab Al-Ziyara Minaret, and Bab Al-Hekma Minaret and called forprayer . The timing to deliver theadhan was given by the chief ofmuezzin s from Al-Shafie Maqam, near theZamzam Well and eachmuezzin repeated what the firstmuezzin said until theadhan was completed. It was a tradition started by the Ottomans, which is continued today in Turkey. After graduating from the Institute of Technical Education in Riyadh in 1970, Mulla worked as a teacher at Abdullah ibn Al-Zubair IntermediateSchool . He was officially appointedmuezzin at theMasjid al-Haram in 1975. He has also had the honor to performadhan at theAl-Masjid al-Nabawi inMedinah on one occasion. Performingadhan at theMasjid al-Haram , for Muslims the holiest mosque in the world, has been claimed by him as a very great honor.ee also
