Rip Van Wink

Rip Van Wink

Rip Van Wink was a comic strip in the UK comic The Beano. It first appeared in Beano issue 1, dated 30 July 1938.

The central idea behind the character of Rip Van Wink (a parody of Rip van Winkle) is that he has been asleep for 700 years - he went to sleep in 1238, and did not wake up until 1938. This means he has no idea of how to live in the modern (1930s) world - for example, in the very first strip he heats a sealed tin of roast beef on an open fire, causing the tin to explode.
