Australian Labor Party MP in theParliament of Western Australia , and was Minister for Agriculture and Food, Forestry, the Mid West and Wheatbelt and Great Southern until the Labor Party lost power in the September 2008 WA election. He is an old boy ofWesley College, Perth .He first entered politics as a farming industry delegate, where he served as the Western Australian delegate to the
Australian Farmers Federation in 1978 and theNational Farmers Federation in 1979.In April 1992, as the result of a
casual vacancy , he entered parliament for the Agricultural region, where he was re-elected in 1996, 2001 and once again in 2005.At the start of his parliamentary career he held the Opposition portfolios of Lands, Mid West and Wheatbelt and assisted the Shadow Health Minister. From 1995 until he was elected to government, he was in charge of the Primary Industry and Fisheries Shadow portfolios.
