Harugeri is a village in the north western part of the
India n state ofKarnataka , 575 km (357 mi) from the states capitalBengaluru . According to acensus taken in 2001, the city has 28,500 inhabitants withKannada being the primarylanguage .Geography
Harugeri is situated on the
Deccan plateau ofgreater India about 14 km (9 mi) from the river Krishna. The area is covered by theDeccan Traps , a large, 68 million years old,volcanic formation.
The average annual rainfall is only 514 mm (20inches ).Economy
With more than 110 square kilometres (25,000
acres ), two thirds of which areirrigated by theGhataprabha project, agriculture is the maineconomy in Harugeri. Main crops includesugarcane ,tobacco andwheat .
Additionally the city is host to a number of mostly agriculture related businesses and venues such as theAPMC and a number of sugarcane mills. The local government (Gram panchayat ) with its 64 members is the biggest in Karnataka.Infrastructure
Harugeri features a vast number of different
schools and colleges and variousbank s including abranch office of theState Bank of India . The city has about 50 doctors practicingmedicine in various fields. The nexthospital however is in the town ofMiraj about an hour from Harugeri and the nexttrain station is 14 km (7.5 mi) away.References
