Audio|Ulsteinvik.ogg|Ulsteinvik is the commercial and administrative centre of the municipality ("kommune") of Ulstein, Norway. The "urban settlement" area of Ulsteinvik has 5,156 people (2008), according to Statistics Norway [http://www.ssb.no/beftett/tab-2008-06-20-01.html] . It is on the island of Hareidlandet in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county ("fylke") in Western Norway.

Economy

The town is built on a natural harbour (in fact, the town's name means "Ulstein harbour"), and has an industry driven largely by shipbuilding, with two major shipyards (Ulstein Verft, Kleven Verft), and dozens of maritime-related firms of all sizes located in the town. As a result of this active and growing industry, Ulsteinvik has significant new construction of residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Ulsteinvik is the home town of the Ulstein Group, which includes the shipyard (Ulstein Verft), but also a growing number of other marine-related companies. The largest of these are Ulstein Elektro AS and Ulstein Design AS. The global head office of Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine is also located in Ulsteinvik.

Culture & Sports

The Sjøborg theatre, on Ulsteinvik's waterfront, has both film and live theatre venues. It shows a mixture of "global" and Norwegian feature films (3-5 different films at a time over 10-12 showings per week). In addition, it welcomes a mixture of local and touring live acts, including big band, operatic revues, English- and Norwegian-language dramatic productions and stand-up comedy.

Ulsteinvik is the home of IL Hødd, a Norwegian First Division (as of 2008) football club. The club has a strong local following, and generates strong attendance at their stadium, Høddvoll.

Ulsteinvik is also the birthplace of the underground cartoonist Øystein Runde.

Transport

Norway Highway 61 runs through the edge of the town centre, and is the major route connecting Ulsteinvik to points north (the municipalities of Hareid and Sula, with connections to Ålesund and others) and south (the municipalities of Herøy, Sande, Vanylven and Vågsøy, with connections to Volda, Måløy and others.

Ulsteinvik is served by one bus company - Fjord1 Buss Møre. However, the express route that connects Ulsteinvik directly to Oslo is operated under the NOR-WAY Bussekspress brand.

Ulsteinvik is 30 km from the Ørsta/Volda airport at Hovden, which has several-daily flights to Oslo and Sogndal. It is also served by the Ålesund airport, 60km away, but with a broader selection of national and international flights.
