- Center for Social and Economic Research
Center for Social and Economic Research (CASE) is a private, independent, non-commercial research institution founded on the idea that research-based policy-making is vital for the economic welfare of societies. CASE was established in September 1991 by a group of prominent Polish economists actively engaged in the initiation of Poland’s economic transformation in the early 1990s. These included Ewa Balcerowicz, Barbara Błaszczyk, Tadeusz Baczko, Władysław Brzeski, Krzysztof Chmielewski, Andrzej Cylwik, Marek Dąbrowski, Anna Fornalczyk, Stanisława Golinowska i Jacek Rostowski. CASE scholars and researchers assisted policy-makers during the early years of the Polish and central and eastern European post-communist transition. In the late 1990s CASE’s work began to focus increasingly on the process of European Union accession and the challenges facing the CEE region as the transition period drew to a close. Today, CASE works in the areas of macroeconomic and monetary policy, relations between the EU and its "eastern neighbourhood," labour markets and social policy, innovation and competitiveness, and institution-building and poverty reduction. CASE is active in more than 30 countries.
