Tomas Bata University in Zlín or Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín (TBU, Czech "Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně") is newly established university in town of Zlín, the Czech Republic.

Although the university is named in honour of entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa, its official English spelling omits most of diacritics.

History

TBU was preceded by the Faculty of Technology before its establishment. This faculty was founded in 1960 as a college workplace for the Svit factory, and it was a part of the Technical University in Bratislava. In 1963 it became a part of the Technical University in Brno. This faculty had been educating specialists in leather, plastics and rubber technology over a long time. Later another college workplace in the town was established - the Design department, which is still a part of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague.

During 1995-97 the Faculty of Management and Economics (FaME) and the Institute of Advertising and Marketing Communication (IRTMK) were established. Standalone university was established in 2000. In January 2002, a third faculty, the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, was formed from the Institute of Advertising and Marketing Communications. TBU is planning to create a fourth faculty, the Faculty of Information Technologies.

The new university building at Jižní Svahy was opened in June 2004. It is used mainly by the Faculty of Technology. More than 1 500 students study there. The whole complex also serves as a base for sports activities.
