- Longarone
Longarone is a town and "
comune " on the banks of the Piave inprovince of Belluno in North-EastItaly . It is situated 20miles from the city ofBelluno and is 473 metres above sea level.Inhabitants of Langarone are known as "Langaronesi" [ [http://veneto.indettaglio.it/eng/comuni/bl/longarone/longarone.html Longarone tourist info] ] , and there are 4,122 people living in the village as of a recent censusFact|date=October 2008. The area of the village is 103.5 km2 with a density of 35 inhabitants per square kilometre. 4,642 people work altogether in Longarone, which is 112.62% of the total population, with most actual inhabitants working within the vilage.
The village was destroyed in the Vajont disaster on
October 9 ,1963 , when a landslide fromMonte Toc forced 50 million cubic metres of water over the top of theVajont Dam . Longarone lay in the immediate path of the wave of mud and water which swept into thevalley below. 1909 villagers were killed.Longarone was rebuilt following the tragedy and is now once again a thriving community. The fortieth anniversary of the disaster was marked, in October 2003, by a commemorative ceremony in Longarone attended by President of the Republic
