Newman is located at 39°47′53″N 87°59′11″W / 39.79806°N 87.98639°W (39.798009, -87.986273)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 956 people, 403 households, and 255 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,531.7 people per square mile (595.3/km²). There were 440 housing units at an average density of 705.0 per square mile (274.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.85% White, 0.73% African American, 0.21% Native American, and 0.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.10% of the population.
There were 403 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.85.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,417, and the median income for a family was $34,250. Males had a median income of $32,750 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,971. About 11.0% of families and 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.6% of those under age 18 and 12.3% of those age 65 or over.
