Atwood is a village in Douglas and Piatt County, Illinois, United States. Main Street separates Piatt County and Douglas County to the east of Main Street is Douglas County, the west is Piatt County. The population was 1,290 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Atwood is located at coor dms|39|48|1|N|88|27|46|W|city (39.800396, -88.462862)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,290 people, 534 households, and 371 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,265.8 people per square mile (873.8/km²). There were 566 housing units at an average density of 994.1/sq mi (383.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.07% White, 0.23% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population.

There were 534 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $36,806, and the median income for a family was $45,625. Males had a median income of $35,573 versus $21,595 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,028. About 7.7% of families and 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.7% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.

Culture

Atwood has a rich cultural history. The quaint village is the yearly home to the locally well-known "Apple Dumplin' Festival." This weekend event features live music, a small-town bazaar, the ever-popular Mud-volleyball tournament, and of course delicious apple dumplin's.
