Kenmore (Fredericksburg, Virginia)
- Kenmore (Fredericksburg, Virginia)
Built in the 1770s for Betty Lewis, the sister of George Washington, the Kenmore plantation once grew tobacco, wheat, and corn. In later years, the plantation served an active role in the civil war, serving as a makeshift military hospital after the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, and served as part of the federal troops’ route to Richmond.
Today, all that remains of the Kenmore plantation is the main brick house, in a location that now holds historic Fredericksburg. Buildings on the original property, such as the kitchen, dairy, laundry, and slave quarters, were all made of wood and did not survive the test of time.
