Kannada : ಕಲ್ಯಾಂಪುದಿ ರಾಧಾಕೃಷ್ಣ ರಾಯ ) FRS (bornSeptember 10 ,1920 ) is a world-renownedIndia nstatistician and currentlyprofessor emeritus atPenn State University . He was born inHadagali , in the state ofKarnataka ,India .He received an M.S. degree in
mathematics fromAndhra University and an M.S. degree inStatistics fromCalcutta University in 1943.Rao worked at the
Indian Statistical Institute and theAnthropological Museum in Cambridge before acquiring a Ph.D. degree at King's College inCambridge University underR.A. Fisher in 1948, to which he added a Sc.D. degree, also from Cambridge, in 1965.Among his best-known discoveries are the
Cramér-Rao bound and theRao-Blackwell theorem both related to the quality ofestimator s. Other areas he worked in includemultivariate analysis, estimation anddifferential geometry .Rao is a Wilks and Mahalanobis medalist; a member of eight National Academies in India, the
United Kingdom , theUnited States , andItaly ; he has received dozens of medals, citations, awards, and other honors for his contributions to statistics and science.
