- USS S-16 (SS-121)
USS "S-16" (SS-121) was a second-group ("S-3" or "Government") "S"-class submarine of the
United States Navy . Her keel was laid down on19 March 1918 by theLake Torpedo Boat Company inBridgeport, Connecticut . She was launched on23 December 1919 sponsored by Mrs. Archibald W. McNeil, and commissioned on17 December 1920 with Lieutenant Commander Andrew C. Bennett in command.Departing from
New London, Connecticut , on31 May 1921 , "S-16" was attached to SubDiv 18 and proceeded via thePanama Canal ,California ,Hawaii , andGuam to thePhilippine Islands . She arrived atCavite ,Luzon , on1 December .In 1922, she sailed from Cavite on
11 October , visitedHong Kong from14 October to28 October , and returned to Cavite on1 November . Sailing fromManila on15 May 1923 , "S-16" visitedShanghai ,Chefoo , andChinwangtao before returning, via Woosung andAmoy , to Cavite on11 September . In the summer of 1924, she visitedShanghai , Tsingtao,Chefoo , andChinwangtao , returning toOlongapo on23 September . Departing Cavite on3 November , she arrived atMare Island, California , on30 December .She remained at Mare Island in 1925 and 1926, and operated along the
California coast in 1927, with a visit toHawaii in July and August. From February 1928 into 1935, "S-16" served in thePanama Canal area although she visitedBaltimore, Maryland , from15 May to5 June 1933 . DepartingCoco Solo on25 January 1935 , "S-16" was decommissioned atPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania , on22 May of that year."S-16" was recommissioned on
2 December 1940 . Following voyages toBermuda and thePanama Canal Zone , she operated atSaint Thomas, United States Virgin Islands from December 1941 through March 1942; in thePanama Canal area from April into August; and from New London during September and into June 1944, with operations atCasco Bay, Maine .She was decommissioned on
4 October 1944 and struck from theNaval Vessel Register . "S-16" was intentionally destroyed by sinking on3 April 1945 , offKey West, Florida .References
