It is the twenty-first of a series of books collecting essays from The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. It was first published by Doubleday & Company in May 1990. The title may be found in George Macdonald's poem "Baby" which begins with the lines
- "Where did you come from, baby dear?
- Out of the everywhere into here."
The same quotation was also used as the title for an episode of the historical television drama series "Upstairs, Downstairs" and in the title of "Out of the Everywhere and Other Extraordinary Visions", a short story collection by James Tiptree, Jr, published in 1981.
