Geography
Owaneco is located at 39°28′56″N 89°11′37″W / 39.48222°N 89.19361°W (39.482193, -89.193597).[1]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 256 people, 97 households, and 78 families residing in the village. The population density was 559.2 people per square mile (214.9/km²). There were 100 housing units at an average density of 218.4 per square mile (83.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.22% White, and 0.78% from two or more races.
There were 97 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,563, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $33,125 versus $19,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,171. About 4.7% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.4% of those under the age of eighteen and 11.8% of those sixty five or over.
Owaneco in popular culture
In the That '70s Show 2-part episode titled "What Is and What Should Never Be", character Steven Hyde (portrayed by Danny Masterson) wears a t-shirt advertising Owaneco Motorcycle Service, an actual motorcycle repair shop on Illinois Route 29 on the south edge of Owaneco. It is one of Owaneco's few remaining businesses.
