Edward Lynch

Edward Lynch (1898 - 12 Sept 1980) was a private in the Australian Imperial Force who on his return to Australia in 1919 wrote a book entitled "Somme Mud."

"Somme Mud" remained unpublished until 2006 when it was published after being 'rediscovered' in 2002 by editor Will Davies. The book has become well known and has been favourably compared to "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Professor Bill Gammage.

In 1921 Lynch enrolled in the Sydney Teacher's College and graduated in 1923. In 1923 he married Yvonne Peters and had five children with her, In 1939 on the outbreak of World War II he joined the Militia. In 1942 he transferred to the regular army and became Officer Commanding of the New South Wales Jungle Training School. After the war he returned to teaching until his retirement.
