Joseph Burton (cricketer)
- Joseph Burton (cricketer)
Joseph Burton (December 10, 1873 — January 25, 1940) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire during the 1901 season. He was born and died in Somercotes.
Burton made his debut in a draw against Nottinghamshire in which English Test cricketer Billy Gunn hit a career best innings of 273 before being caught, and in the Derbyshire innings, Levi Wright hit a countering innings of 193. Burton himself scored his career-best innings in his very first match, scoring 51 not out from sixth in the batting order.
Burton made two solid innings of 34 and 33 just a week later, however, at the end of the month, Derbyshire went down to an innings defeat at the hands of Lancashire, in which Burton underperformed, scoring a duck in the first innings of the match. Burton picked himself up quickly and was given a short run in the opening order for the team, but was not able to maintain good enough form to be given a chance in the side the following season.
Despite an average of over 18 runs in the season, Derbyshire finished 1901 winless and bottom of the County Championship table, with thirteen losses from twenty games.
