Shilu Abed

Shilu Abed

Shilu Abed (5 March 19?? - 23 April 1997), was a Bangladeshi pioneer of craftmanship and helped to organize craftsmen. She was the founder of Aarong and served as the chief advisor to Aarong till her untimely death. She had also worked for rehabilitating the artisans and their advancement. She was also a social worker. She was also married to Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC (NGO).

hilu Abed Crafts Award

The Shilu Abed Memorial Trust formed in 1998, introduced the "Shilu Abed Karushilpa Purashkar" or the Shilu Abed Crafts Award in 1998. It is awarded annually to Bangladeshi craftsmen by the Bangladesh Jatiya Karushilpa Parishad (National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB)), sponsored by BRAC-Aarong on the occasion of her birthday, on 5th March every year.
