Jonathan Belcher (jurist)

Jonathan Belcher (23 July 1710 – 30 March 1776) was a Canadian lawyer, chief justice, and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, second son of Jonathan Belcher and Mary Partridge, he received an Bachelor of Arts degree in 1728 and an Master of Arts degree in 1731 from Harvard College. He received another Master's degree in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1733 and a third Master's degree from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). In 1730, he studied law in Middle Temple, London and was called to the English Bar in 1734.

In 1754, he was sent to Nova Scotia to become the first Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. He resigned in 1776. From 1761 to 1763, he was the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.
