For 20 years, the Ethnic Business Awards have stood as a triumph for diversity and a celebration of success. As one of Australia’s longest running business awards, the Awards were created by Founder Joseph Assaf in 1988 and were designed to recognise and reward the valuable and innovative contributions migrants have made to Australian business and the economy.
In its early days, the Ethnic Business Awards were hosted and exclusively sponsored by the National Australia Bank. As a result, for a number of years, the Awards were known as the National Australia Bank Ethnic Business Awards.
After a longstanding relationship with the National Australia Bank, which still stands today, sponsorship for the Ethnic Business Awards were opened up to other sponsors in 2002.
Since then, there has been a myriad of corporate sponsors such as Telstra, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Gulf Air and MBF along with government departments such as The Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources and Centrelink, who have all supported and recognised the Ethnic Business Awards as an avenue which acknowledges migrant success.
Normally, the Ethnic Business Awards are comprised of two core categories - the Small Business category and the Medium to Large Business category.
Over the years, other categories have been included to recognise various achievements across a broad spectrum. These have included:
• Business Migrant Awards;
• Ethnic Media Awards;
• The Arts; and
• Women in Business. In a recent address at a Gala Award ceremony, Founder Joseph Assaf said,“Australia was built on migration; and the Ethnic Business Awards are a continuous reminder and celebration of this fact. They allow each of us to recognise the great and positive contributions of migrants to our country”.
Today, the Ethnic Business Awards continue to provide a unique and prestigious recognition of Australia’s migrants, who have followed their dreams and overcome hardship to accomplish well deserved success.
