Glion was founded in 1962 by hotel entrepreneur Frédéric Tissot and Professor Walter Huntziker. The school continued to operate under its original leadership until it was sold in its entirety to Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. in November,
2000 .In 2002, Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. changed its name to Laureate Education, Inc. and Les Roches became part of a division called Laureate International Universities. Laureate operates universities around the world, with more than 165,000 students each year in higher education programs. It is currently the largest international network of universities in the world.
The University
Glion is composed of three separate schools:
*Glion Hotel School, for students seeking high-level careers in hospitality management
*Glion Graduate School, for students pursuing advanced hospitality degrees
*Glion Sports Management School, for students aspiring to work in the Event, Sport and Entertainment arenaCampuses
Glion has two separate campuses:

Glion is fully accredited by the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges , Inc. through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.Additionally, Glion is recognized by the Canton of

1885 The Bellevue and Belvédère Hotel opens
1962 Opening of The "Institut International de Glion" hotel school with some 15 students from five countries.
1964 Creation of the Alumni Association
1977 The name changes to "Centre International de Glion" (CIG).
1985 Glion is a founding member of the newly formed Swiss Hotel Schools Association (ASEH).
1989 Opening of Bulle campus.
1993 The first franchising contract is signed with The European Centre for Tourism Studies, Corfu, Greece.
1995 Introduction of the first Bachelor Degree.
2000 Start of the Endicott's Master of Education programme.
2001 The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), Extension of the residential facilities on Bulle Campus with the opening of the Residence Raymond Jaussi.
2002 Opening of Glion Sports Management School on the Glion campus. Creation of Glion Institute of Higher Education which regroups both Schools (Glion Hotel School and Glion Sports Management School).
2008 Les Roches-Gruyère University of Applied Sciences achieves Swiss Federal government recognition and recruits its first students at Bulle and Les Roches-Bluche.Reputation
In September 2007,
Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Travel & Tourism (UK) the world’s largest provider of custom research and analysis conducted a broad industrysurvey amongst a large sample of hiring managers from leading international hospitality organizations around the world. (The survey was paid for by Laureate education, the owner of Glion and Les Roches. ) The primary purpose of this survey was to establish the relative ‘ranking’ of the various international hospitality management schools providinguniversity level programs from which these employers are likely to recruit staff. Among the top 3 industry rankings were Glion Institute of Higher Education (2nd),Les Roches Hotel Management School (3rd) andÉcole hôtelière de Lausanne (1st).ee also
Later on, in 2007-2008, Glion was considered the top university of the world followed by Lausanne.
