United States . The population was 2,712 at the 2000 census. This town is thecounty seat of Jefferson CountyGR|6. It is located southwest of Augusta on theOgeechee River .Louisville was laid out in
1786 as a prospective state capital of Georgia. Construction began later, and its state buildings were completed in1795 . The town of Louisivlle served as thestate capital of Georgia from1796 to1806 .As a small town and county seat, there are no significant business and industries in Louisville now, other than the county government. It is located on U.S. Highway 1.

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,712 people, 994 households, and 664 families residing in this town. Thepopulation density was 755.5 people per square mile (291.7/km²). There were 1,123 housing units at an average density of 312.8/sq mi (120.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 65.93% African American, 33.63% White, 0.04% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.There were 994 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% were married couples living together, 27.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the town, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 77.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 71.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $19,883, and the median income for a family was $32,578. Males had a median income of $31,500 versus $16,921 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $15,028. About 23.1% of families and 28.9% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 27.8% of those under age 18 and 51.8% of those age 65 or over.References
