Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna

Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna (b. April 25 1919 in Bhugani, Pauri Garhwal District, Uttarakhand — d. Mar 17, 1989) was a Congress Party leader and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The Bahuguna family hails from Garhwal but settled in Allahabad. The family’s traditional village, Bughani, falls in Pauri Garhwal. After the Emergency he left the Congress with Babu Jagjivan Ram on February 2, 1977; together, they launched the Congress for Democracy and hastened the party’s downfall in the post-Emergency period. Later they joined the Janata coalition, and occupied posts in the Union cabinet under Morarji Desai in 1977. Following Janata Party's collapse, Bahuguna returned to the Congress fold in 1980 and was made the party’s secretary-general, a post created for him; he, however, left the party again soon thereafter to join the Lok Dal. Mr Bahuguna won in 1980 from Garhwal constituency (his last electoral victory) but lost in a byelection thereafter.Allahabad was the constituency from which H.N. Bahuguna lost to filmstar Amitabh Bachchan in his life’s last electoral battle.

While a Brahmin, he was noted for his popularity among the Muslim communities of UP. Uttaranchal's largest university, in Garhwal, is named after him. H.N.Bahuguna's two children Vijay Bahuguna and Rita Bahuguna Joshi are in politics too.
