census GR|2 of 2000, there were 10,506 people, 3,620 households, and 2,722 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 627.9 people per square mile (242.5/km²). There were 4,203 housing units at an average density of 251.2/sq mi (97.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.25% White, 21.14% African American, 0.58% Native American, 1.54% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.24% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.61% of the population.There were 3,620 households out of which 50.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.4% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.34.
In the city the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 38.5% from 25 to 44, 13.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,303, and the median income for a family was $44,708. Males had a median income of $32,795 versus $20,856 for females. The
