John Coburn (
October 27 ,1825 –January 28 ,1908 ) was aUnited States Representative fromIndiana and an officer in theUnion Army during theAmerican Civil War .Early life and career
Coburn was born in
Indianapolis, Indiana , were he attended the public schools. Later, he graduated fromWabash College ,Crawfordsville, Indiana , in 1846. He studiedlaw , was admitted to the bar in 1849, and commenced practice in Indianapolis.Coburn was a member of the
Indiana House of Representatives in 1850 and was also a judge of the court of common pleas from 1859 to 1861, when he resigned to enter the Union Army following the outbreak of the Civil War. He became colonel of the33rd Indiana Infantry onSeptember 16 ,1861 , and was mustered outSeptember 20 ,1864 . In the omnibus promotions following the Civil War, he was brevetted as Brigadier General of Volunteers dating fromMarch 13 ,1865 .Congressional service
Coburn was appointed as the first secretary of the
Territory of Montana in March 1865 but resigned at once. He was elected judge of the fifth judicial circuit of Indiana in October 1865 and resigned in July 1866. Later, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4 ,1867 –March 3 ,1875 ). While in Congress, he served as chairman, Committee on Public Expenditures (Forty-first Congress ), and as a member of Committee on Military Affairs (Forty-second and Forty-Third Congresses). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to theForty-fourth Congress .After leaving Congress, he was appointed a justice of the
Supreme Court of the Territory of Montana onFebruary 19 ,1884 , and served until December 1885. He returned to Indianapolis, and resumed the practice of law. He died in Indianapolis onJanuary 28 ,1908 , and was buried inCrown Hill Cemetery .References
