Toronto, County Durham

Toronto is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the north of Bishop Auckland and represented in Wear Valley District Council.

Toronto is located on a plateau north of Bishop Auckland and north of the River Wear.

Population in the village is similar to Bishop Auckland , predominately white. The village consists of houses surrounded by agricultural land.

One might ask why this little village is called Toronto. The word originally means 'meeting of the waters' very relevant to Ontario where Toronto lies at the meeting of several rivers. How did Toronto County Durham get the same name? A coal baron with land in County Durham was visiting Toronto when he was told that coal had been discovered under his land. He therefore decided to call the mine Toronto, from whence the village also took its name.
