Named for Nashua, the 1955 United States Horse of the Year, it was first run in 1975. A Grade II race, it is open to two-year-olds and has been raced over a distance of one mile since 1994. Held in late October, it currently offers a $100,000-added purse.
The race returned to Grade II status in 2009 when the American Graded Stakes Committee upgraded it from Grade III.[1].
In 2001, the race was run at Belmont Park. The distance was set at a mile and 70 yards for 1985, at a mile and a sixteenth from 1987 to 1993. The race was not run in 1995.
