Elections in Thailand

Thailand elected on national level a legislature. The National Assembly ("Ratha Sapha") had two chambers. The House of Representatives ("Saphaputhan Ratsadon") had 500 members, elected for a four year term, 100 members by proportional representation and 400 members in single-member constituencies. The Senate ("Wuthisapha") had 200 members elected in single-seat constituencies. Only non-partisans were allowed to run for office. Thailand had a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often had a chance of gaining power alone, and parties worked with each other to form coalition governments. However, all this has been cast into doubt by the recent coup, which revoked the Constitution and suspended the parliament.
