Sanderstead railway station serves the village of Sanderstead in the London Borough of Croydon, although the station is some distance north-west of the original village centre. It is in Travelcard Zone 6.

The station is served by Oxted Line trains from East Grinstead and Uckfield to East Croydon and London Bridge and London Victoria.

Services

The typical off-peak service in trains per hour is:

*2 to London Victoria via East Croydon
*2 to East Grinstead

Although the next station north of Sanderstead is South Croydon, no off-peak trains from this station call there.

History

Sanderstead was opened on 10 March 1884, almost two years after the East Grinstead line had been opened. Trains from here also served the Woodside and South Croydon Railway line to Elmers End until that line closed in 1983. A short stretch of that line from the former Selsdon station towards the site of Spencer Road Halt continued in use to serve an oil terminal until 1993. In the latter days of the Elmers End line, Sanderstead station was electrified although the line between there and South Croydon was not. It was subsequently included in the electrification of the East Grinstead Line.

Station Building

The original weatherboarded station buildings were severely damaged by fire on 5 June 1987. The station footbridge is the only remaining structure from the original station, although this too has changed over the years. The present brick building was opened in September 1987.

The station building is open from early morning until about 8pm on weekdays, and shuts early afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a small tea bar at one end of the station which has recently been re-opened, it is only open during morning peak hours. The station toilets are kept locked and passengers requiring their services must request a key from the ticket office.
