Gladiator Mosaic

Gladiator Mosaic

:"Not to be confused with the "Mosaic of the Gladiators" from the Villa Dar Buc Ammera near Leptis Magna." [http://www.livius.org/a/libya/zliten/villa_dar_buc_ammera-gladiators.html]

The Gladiator Mosaic is a famous 320s AD mosaic of gladiators found on the Borghese estate at Torrenova, on the Via Casilina outside Rome, in 1834. It was one of the antiquities which reinvigorated the Borghese collection after it had shrunk following the sale of much of the collection to Napoleon I.

In the mosaic, a symbol similar to Ø marks the names of gladiators who died in battle.
