Sullia (ಸುಳ್ಯ) (also know as Sulya)is a taluk in Dakshina Kannada district of the state of Karnataka ( ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ), India. It is a small town, surrounded with evergreen wooded mountains being a part of the Western Ghats range in South India. Sullia has plantations of rubber, areca nut, coconut, cashew nut, black pepper and banana. Education centers in Sullia offers variety of continuing educations to students from around the world. Road connecting the two major cities of Karnataka; Mysore and Mangalore runs through Sullia.

History

The name Sullia has come from the word "suli" which in Kannada means "whirlpool". This whirlpool is near Kurunjibhag and is very dangerous.

Inherited from the mother nation India, Sullia is a home for people from all religion. Sullia is famous for its rich religious tradition. The majority of residents are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains. The main languages of Sullia are Kannada(official language),Havyaka(Language of Brahmins), Are-kannada (Arebhashe), Tulu, Konkani, Malayalam, local version of Malayalam and Tamil language.

Climate

The monsoon rains during the months of June to September. The spring season occurs during the month of November to January. During this season the local temperature ranges between 15ºC (59ºF) to 25ºC (77ºF). The summer or dry season between the month of February to May

Economy / Agriculture

Economy of Sullia is mainly attributed to agriculture and horticulture. The region has got fertile land and rich water resources. It is blessed by nature to help grow rubber trees, arecanut, cashew nut, rice, banana,venilla and jackfruit.

*Sullia has suspension bridges (locally known as hanging bridges) helping local pedestrians to cross across Payashwini river. These bridges also attracts lot of tourists.
*Payaswini and Kumaradhara are the major two rivers of Sullia.
*Kumara Parvata mountain is one of the famous trekking paradise situated near Sri Kukke Subramanya Temple.
*Abbey Falls is 10 kilometers from Madikeri (50 kilometers from Sullia)
*Sri Kukke Subramanya Temple situated in Subramanya (village) around 44 Kilometers from Sullia is a famous pilgrimage location.
* Sri Mallikarjuna Temple situated in Thodikana around 15 Kilometers from Sullia is a famous pilgrimage location and also a famous tourist place.

Nature Hiking

Sullia, geographically being located in a cradle of Western Ghats surrounded with rich green woods, forms a main attraction spot for the nature hiking individuals and groups. It accommodates several mountains, to name a few, Kumara Parvatha, Bisila Ghaati, Bantamale, Patti Gudde and Sampaje Ghaati, in and around.

The places mentioned may be the perfect choices for the trekkers and mountaineers. They contain a variety of land scapes with small and large water streams. On the pathways, one would come across diverse species of flora and fauna. In the mid-nature, it would a tireless day long walking. Mountain tops, with mild breeze under the sparkling sky, would be a soothing place to relax and get ready for the return trek.
