Metz was promoted with the "Freelance Scientist" advert starring Julian Barratt as a scientist explaining that Metz caused 'Judders' as well as the "Forrest" advert directed by Enda McCallion and featuring the Judderman.
Judderman
The Judderman is the central character in "Forrest", an advert for Metz. An elf/Jack Frost-like creature, the Judderman waylays innocent travellers and tempts them to taste the alcohol, at which they 'judder' due to its being served cold. The advert was known for scaring children. There were also an additional two adverts which promoted the Storm brand[1] and Still Metz and Black Metz[2] as well as another commercial where the Judderman is disguised as an old woman[3].
A character in series 1 of Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding's show The Mighty Boosh seems to be based on the Judderman, as he makes people judder due to him living in the arctic, as well as having a similar appearance (large spiky head and fingers, black one-piece clothing).
An outfit worn in Lady Gaga's Bad Romance music video also appears to be inspired partly by the Judderman.
The Judderman character starred in his own point-and-click style exploration game, created as a viral ad campaign for Metz. http://www.anafor.ru/games/quest/judderman.htm
Man in the Mask
Prior to these advertisements, came an advert based on a single character in a red balaclava, doing a piece to camera, in snowy, cold, mountain background. The slogan for the series of adverts was "why does the man in the mask drink Metz". One of the more memorable adverts was the explanation that "every time a stranger enters the village and drinks Metz, they all wonder if it is me, without my mask on" <leans towards camera> "one time, it was".
Other Advertisements
After the Judderman campaign, there was a further Metz advert where a man drinks the drink in a bar and feels the effect of it.[4]
