USS "Recruit" (AM-285) was an
Admirable-class minesweeper built for theU.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in thePacific Ocean before voyaging to theU.S. East Coast for decommissioning. Post-war, her crew returned home proudly with threebattle stars to their credit."Recruit" was laid down by the

Following shakedown off
San Pedro, California , "Recruit" steamed5 January 1945 forPearl Harbor , whence she escorted twoconvoys toEniwetok . From there she proceeded with the second convoy toUlithi arriving9 March .Supporting the invasion of Okinawa
Ten days later "Recruit" departed
Ulithi with task group TG 52.5 forOkinawa . From the 24th to the 27th, she conducted clearance sweeps south ofTokashiki Island,Kerama Retto , then shifted toOkinawa for a pre-invasion sweep off the western beaches. After the invasion she operated north ofIe Shima , then returned to theKerama Retto area.Attacked by kamikaze aircraft
On
6 April , off the northern tip ofOkinawa Shima, "Recruit" fought off several aerial attacks, splashing three planes, and rescuing crewmen from USS|Rodman|DMS-21 and USS|Emmons|DMS-22, damaged bykamikaze planes. The rest of April was spent in conducting clearance sweeps in theKerama Retto andTonachi Shima areas.On
4 May "Recruit" retired briefly toUlithi , returning to Okinawa4 June for screening operations around the transport areas off Okinawa, then conductedantisubmarine patrol offZampa Misaki .Large-scale mine clearance operations
On
4 July , "Recruit" took part in one of the largest sweeping operations ever undertaken in Pacific waters, the 50-ship sweep in theOperation Juneau area of theEast China Sea . "Recruit" swept 15 mines in this operation. In August she took part in a sweep of theOperation Skagway area of the northern East China Sea, sweeping 15 more mines.End-of-war activity
On
31 August , afterJapan had capitulated, "Recruit", as part oftask unit TU 95.4.31, departed Okinawa, en route toTsugaru Strait , NorthernHonshū and after sweeping a channel intoMutsu Kaiwan , moved on toOminato Ko, anchoring there8 September with other units of the North Pacific Force. From then until20 October , the task group swept mines in the Tsugaru Strait.On
20 October , "Recruit", in company with TU 56.4.1, sailed for Sasebo, arriving on the 26th. On3 November she proceeded toHiro Wan ,Honshū . Arriving two days later, she acted aspilot vessel betweenHiro Wan and Kure Ko for the remainder of the month. On1 December , "Recruit" returned to Sasebo, whence she got underway for theUnited States ,28 December .Post-war decommissioning
She returned to
San Pedro, California ,15 February by way ofSaipan andPearl Harbor , transited thePanama Canal Zone 24 March and reachedOrange, Texas ,3 April , where she decommissioned15 August 1946 .Reclassified MSF-285,
7 February 1955 , "Recruit" was moved29 May 1958 toGreen Cove Springs, Florida , where she remained until struck from theNavy list 1 May 1962 . Her fate is now unknown.Awards
