Pokémon Adventures protagonists

This is a list of main protagonists of the "Pokémon Adventures" manga.

Red

Red is one of the protagonists of the "Red/Blue/Green" saga. He starts off in Pallet Town as an aspiring trainer, and gets a Bulbasaur and a Pokédex from Professor Oak. He also has a Poliwhirl he has known since childhood, and uses these two Pokémon on his adventure. Professor Oak's grandson, Blue (Green in Japan) is his childhood rival.

While trying to catch a mischievous girl named Green (Blue in Japan) who stole his Gym badges, Red discovered information on the sinister Team Rocket, who were trying to clone the rarest Pokémon in the world, Mew, as part of a plan to create an unstoppable Pokémon called Mewtwo. Green wanted to meet Mew and capture it for profit. She met Mew when battling Team Rocket, but she could only snap a quick picture of it before it left. Eventually, Red was obliged to team up with Blue and Green in order to beat Team Rocket’s Elite Triad, Lt. Surge, Koga, and Sabrina. Later, he faced off against the leader of Team Rocket, Giovanni, alone and managed to defeat him. He then battled Blue in the Pokémon League, emerged victorious, and thus attracted the attention of the Elite Four.

In the "Yellow" saga, Red had been kidnapped by the Elite Four and frozen in a block of ice. When he did finally manage to escape with the aid of Giovanni, he sought out his allies and defeated the Elite Four. He later appeared in the "Gold/Silver" saga to help the protagonists fight against the Mask of Ice, the leader of Neo Team Rocket.

Red played a leading role again in the "FireRed/LeafGreen" saga, when he teamed up with Blue and Green to rescue Professor Oak, who had been kidnapped and taken to the Sevii Islands. While there, he encountered a newly revived Team Rocket and the new Beast Warrior Trio, Oca, Jaguara, and Storc, as well as the evil psychic Pokémon, Deoxys. After his team lost to them, Mewtwo appeared to help them. The team then managed to defeat Giovanni and Deoxys once and for all, but, along with the rest of his team, got turned into stone doing so.

Blue

Blue (known as Green in Japan) is one of the protagonists of the "Red/Green/Blue" saga. He started his journey with a Charmander and continued to train it well throughout his adventure, making it the first out of the three starters to evolve. Starting out quite cocky and aloof, Blue grew less cocky and more aloof as the series progressed.

In volume 3, he helped Red and Green defeat Sabrina, one of Team Rocket's Elite Triad. Later, he battled Red in the Pokémon League, losing just very slightly. This caused the two to gain respect for each other.

Blue is known to have a knack for Pokémon training. When he was younger, he was taught to fight and train by his master, Chuck, the Cianwood City Gym Leader. His training was unique, as Chuck forced him to train up his body, to be able to relate to his Pokémon better.

In the "Yellow Caballero" saga, Blue helped Yellow by “training” her as well, living up to his reputation as the best Pokémon Trainer. He came back later to help her fight the Elite Four.

One year later, in the "Gold/Silver" arc, Blue and Red competed for the position of Viridian City Gym Leader. Red won, but was forced to decline because of his wounds, and Green became the new Gym Leader. He later helped out in the final battle with the Mask of Ice, the leader of Neo Team Rocket. Later still, in the "FireRed/LeafGreen" arc, he helped Red disband a newly-resurrected Team Rocket but got turned to stone doing so.

Green

Green (known as nihongo|Blue|ブルー|Burū in Japan) is one of the protagonists of the "Red/Blue/Green" arc. She stole her starter Pokémon, Squirtle, from Professor Oak as, having been kidnapped long ago by Ho-Oh, she could never have a PokéDex, nor her own Pokémon, because no one knew she was from Pallet Town, and no one would find reason to offer these gifts to a stranger. As the series progressed, however, she decides to team up with the other Pallet Town trainers, Red and Blue, in order to defeat Sabrina of Team Rocket.

Green returned later in the saga, having qualified for the Pokémon League Tournament. She progressed through the tournament and made it into the semifinals, but was defeated by Professor Oak. On knowing her problem, Professor Oak took pity on her, and gave her the third PokéDex and forgave her for stealing his Squirtle.

In the "Yellow" Saga, set two years later, Green was a sort of "shadow" trainer, trailing Yellow. In the third volume, it is revealed that she had been snatched at the age of five by a mysterious bird Pokémon (Ho-oh), which gave her a debilitating phobia of Flying-type Pokémon. Green blamed the Elite Four for this disaster, carrying a grudge against the Elite Four into the "Gold/Silver" saga.

In the "Gold/Silver" saga, Green first appeared in volume 13, when she was shown at a Pokémon Gym Leader's Tournament. It is revealed that she and Silver had escaped from the grasp of the Mask of Ice, the leader of Neo Team Rocket, at a young age, while others abducted along with them remained and became the Mask of Ice's servants. She later helped out in the final battle against the Mask of Ice.

In the "FireRed/LeafGreen" saga, Green teamed up with Red and Blue to rescue Professor Oak and her parents, who had been kidnapped by the evil Psychic Pokémon Deoxys and taken to the Sevii Islands. In the end of this saga, they manage to stop Deoxys and disband the newly-revived Team Rocket, but get turned to stone in the bargain.

Yellow

Yellow is the primary protagonist of the "Yellow" saga. Having been born in the Viridian Forest she has the powers to heal Pokémon and hear their thoughts. A happy-go-lucky girl who isn't very good with Pokémon skills, she especially dislikes Pokémon battles because she cannot bring herself to hurt them.

She first appeared in the final volume of the "Red/Blue/Green" saga, though her name is not revealed until the "Yellow" saga. Having lost her way in the Viridian Forest, Yellow was attacked by a wild Dratini. Red saved her and escorted her back to her hometown, Viridian City, and helps her catch her first Pokémon, a Rattata. Later, Yellow found Red seriously injured following his battle with Giovanni, and nursed him back to health.

Two years later, Yellow showed up at Professor Oak's lab disguised as a boy. Green sends her on a mission to rescue Red from the Elite Four, because of her mysterious Viridian Powers that allow her to heal and communicate with Pokémon. It is revealed that every few years, a baby of Viridian Forest is blessed with these powers. Lance, the leader of the Elite Four and Giovanni of Team Rocket also have these powers. Her true gender is revealed only at the end of volume six to Blaine, but she puts off informing Red of it.

In the "Gold/Silver/Crystal" saga, Yellow traveled to Johto and meets up with Crystal. It is revealed that Yellow was the one who woke up the 3 legendary beasts - Suicune, Raikou, and Entei - from within the Burned Tower in Ecruteak. The two of them work together briefly, until they are separated by Lugia at sea.

After the attack, Yellow and her uncle washed up on shore, where they were brought to the daycare center run by an elderly couple. Sonn, the center is attacked by a group of Neo Team Rocket members who seem only to be interested in Yellow's hat. In truth, the two feathers on her hat were the Silver Wing from Lugia and the Rainbow Wing from Ho-Oh, the keys to traveling in time, stolen from the Mask of Ice many years ago and planted there by Blue. This explained why the Mask of Ice has been trying to catch Lugia and Ho-Oh.

After fleeing from the center, Yellow continues to Ilex Forest, where she found Crystal, Silver, Red, Blue, and Green battling the Mask of Ice. As the Mask of Ice captured Celebi and traveled back in time, they found that Gold was trapped within time and needed the feathers to be freed. Gold and Yellow finally realize that the Wings are on her hat, and she is forced to take it off in front of Red in order to save Gold. At this point Red finally learned Yellow’s true gender.

During the "FireRed/LeafGreen" arc, Yellow (having grown older) returned to Viridian City. While there, she met Silver, who believed that he may have originally come from this area and had ties to the Viridian Gym before he was kidnapped by Mask of Ice, and is now looking for his family. With her aid and the sudden arrival of the Team Rocket operatives Orca and Storc (whom the two promptly face in a battle), Silver learned that he was the son of Giovanni, former Viridian City Gym leader and head of Team Rocket. After he was kidnapped by the evil duo, Yellow gave chase on her Butterfree, and soon managed to break into the Team Rocket helicopter to rescue him. Yellow is not a fighter but as she grows angry her pokemon's level rise to eighties, making her as dangerous as the other Kanto champions in battle. Storc strongly believes that if the two had engaged into battle with her, they would have lost. She later reunited with Red, Blue and Green, and helped permanently disband Team Rocket in the Sevii Islands, but got turned to stone while doing so.

ilver

nihongo|Silver|シルバー|Shirubā, Giovanni's son, is one of the protagonist's of the "Gold/Silver/Crystal" arc. A silent and cold boy, Silver was kidnapped by the Mask of Ice as a child, and grew up alongside Green. As the years went by, however, the two children escaped and began their lives afresh. While Green travelled to Kanto and stole Professor Oak's Squirtle, Silver traveled to Johto and stole Elm's Totodile. In the end of the saga, he helps in defeating the Mask of Ice and disbanding his organization, Neo Team Rocket. It was also revealed that he has worn the same clothes since he was 2, somehow they have grown with him??

In the "FireRed/LeafGreen" arc, Storc of Team Rocket told Silver that he was Giovanni's son. Silver refused to believe this, until Giovanni risked his life to save him. This caused Silver to accept Giovanni as his father, and decide to help him find redemption. In the end of the saga, though, he is turned to stone along with the rest of his team while trying to disband Team Rocket.

Silver's only appearance in the anime is a cameo in the opening of the Japanese version of "The Legend of Thunder", a feature-length special starring the protagonists of Pokémon Crystal. In the second generation games, Silver is the main character’s rival.

Crystal

Crystal is a character from Pokémon Adventures and the protagonist of the game Pokémon Crystal. She first appears in volume 10.

She's a specialist at capturing Pokémon, hired by Professor Oak. As a child, she took a bad fall and broke both of her arms. Because of the accident, she learned to catch Pokémon by kicking Poké Balls, a habit she kept long after her arms healed.

She had many Pokémon before first appearing, but her "starter" Pokémon was a Chikorita which escaped from Professor Elm's laboratory, desperate to go on a journey. Her Pokémon include a Smoochum, a Hitmonchan, a Parasect, a Arcanine,a Natu and Cubone.At the end of the G/S/C series she rides on the three legendary dogs to go help defeat Mask of Ice.

Later on in the series, she hired Emerald to capture Jirachi during the opening week of the Battle Frontier.

According to the series, she has captured at least one of every non-legendary Pokémon in the world, and has completed the Pokédex in every incarnation.

Ruby

Originally from the Johto region, he moved with his mother to Hoenn to live closer to his father Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg City. Despite being a Gym Leader's son, Ruby hates battling and prefers Pokémon Contests.

Ruby began the series as a vain and condescending young man who did have a good heart deep down inside. The day he arrived in Hoenn was his eleventh birthday. On that very day, he ran away from his new home since he thought Norman would not endorse his choice to be a Pokémon coordinator. This was true at first, but Norman had decided to let Ruby become a Coordinator when the boy turned eleven. Sadly, Ruby did not stay to find this out.

After running away, he met Sapphire, the daughter of Professor Birch. They made a bet with each other - they would both travel around Hoenn, each trying to achieve their respective goals in eighty days — he would try to win every Contest and she would try to win all eight Badges.

His first three Pokémon are Poochyena which he names Nana, Skitty which he names Coco, and Ralts which he names Ruru, but he lends Ralts to Wally and due to an earthquake which sends Ruby into a raging river, he did not get her back until much later on. He also had a Feebas which he names Mimi,a Castform which he names Popo and a Mudkip which he names Zuzu.

Ruby, along with Sapphire, underwent an outfit change at the end of Volume 19. It is later discovered that under his cap is a scar he received from a Salamence years ago in Johto when he met Sapphire. He also has had a crush on Sapphire since he first met her in Johto and confessed that to Sapphire at the end of Volume 21.

Ruby may dislike Pokémon Battles, but he is in fact an extremely capable Pokémon Trainer in his own right, possibly as strong as or even stronger than Sapphire is. At the age of six, he actually "liked" climbing trees and Pokémon Battles. However, when he injured himself while protecting Sapphire from Salamence, the girl became frightened and cried. Ruby assumed there and then that the reason Sapphire was scared was because he fought too fiercely and too wildly. From that day onwards, he forsook Pokémon Battles, choosing only to Battle when no one else was watching him or has no other choice.

Ruby is inspired by Brendan in the Pokémon video games, just like how May of the video games inspired Sapphire. However, unlike Brendan, Ruby is a Pokémon Coordinator and Brendan a Pokémon Trainer.

A trainer whose appearance matches Ruby/Brendan has unnamed, non-speaking cameos in the introduction sequences of "", and "Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea".

Sapphire Birch, better known simply as nihongo|Sapphire|サファイア|Safaia is a protagonist in the Ruby & Sapphire arc and recurring character in the Battle Frontier arc of the "Pokémon Adventures" manga, first appearing in Volume 15.

The daughter of Professor Birch, she is a wild tomboy who usually wore clothing made out of leaves. She eventually encountered Ruby, the son of Petalburg Gym Leader Norman, who was then in the process of running away from his new home in Littleroot Town.

While saving Ruby from three Mightyena, Sapphire injured herself. In gratitude for saving him, Ruby dressed her wounds and made an outfit for her. In Volume 19, it is shown that the reason why Sapphire chose to wear the clothes he made for her was because he wrote, in a letter enclosed with the clothes, that the clothes would definitely fit her. Sapphire gets her third outfit change at the end of Volume 19. Once again, it was Ruby who made the clothes for her, and told her personally that the new clothes would fit her.

Sapphire may be wild and tomboyish, but in actuality, she is a devoted Pokémon Trainer who would go to any lengths to achieve her goals and protect what she treasures most. She was very upset when Ruby had declared that he would rather go back to Johto than stand beside the Gym Leaders as they prepare to face Team Aqua and Team Magma in Volume 19. She persuaded Winona to battle her later, and the Gym Leader was so impressed by her fighting spirit and her will to defend Hoenn that she gave Sapphire the Feather Badge.

In Volume 21, Sapphire was revealed to have a crush on Ruby, though it had been hinted at on several occasions before that.

Sapphire has her wild tomboyish personality, and Ruby his prissy feminine personality, because of an incident that happened when they met briefly at the age of five. She and Ruby were attacked by a wild Salamence. Ruby protected Sapphire, leading Sapphire to believe that she should stand up for herself more. It is highly probable that, because of this belief, she forsook Pokémon Contests and discarded her liking for fanciful stuff at that time, turning her attention to Pokémon Battles.

Sapphire is based on May, the female character from the video games. However, Sapphire's character is notably different from the other two versions of May, especially the animated version, in terms of personality and attitude. In the animated series, May is a Pokémon coordinator, while Sapphire believes coordinators to be rather prissy and prefers Pokémon Battles to contests.

Wally

Wally first appears in volume 15, and is the first hero character to not be named after one of the Game Boy/Game Boy Advance games. He’s a sickly young boy with a respiratory problem whose parents didn’t want him training Pokémon. However, Ruby lends Wally his Ralts, and with Ralts he captures a Kecleon. He later obtains other green Pokémon -- Cacturne, Roselia, Treecko (from Professor Birch), and Flygon (from Norman). Norman enlists Wally to help him awaken the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza, because it is needed to stop Kyogre and Groudon from fighting and destroying the world. Wally sports an extra green vest in addition to his outfit in the games. The vest allows Wally to breathe normally in smoked filled areas that he normally could not due to his illness. At the end of the Ruby/Sapphire manga he returns Kirlia to Ruby, and his Poke-Dex to Professor Birch. However, his Grovyle was blasted off the Sky Pillar while Wally attempted to awaken Rayquaza for Norman. The Grovyle have evolved into Emerald's Sceptile (shown in the flashback of Sceptile). Wally's Japanese name is Mitsuru.

Emerald

Emerald is a character in the Pokémon Adventures manga, a challenger in the Battle Frontier. He is an excellent battler and has proved it several times by defeating Factory Head Noland, Lucy, Brandon and Greta. He is also considered good at catching Pokémon, and for that Crystal has hired him to catch the legendary Jirachi. Despite his great interest in Pokémon battling, he claims to not like Pokémon very much. Since he got a Sceptile, Sudowoodo and Dusclops from the Battle Frontier, he seems to accept them more and more. He appears to be extremely short, and he is actually shorter than he looks. Under his long sleeved clothes he has high platform shoes, and he always holds a pair of external mechanical hands which he holds with his real hands. However, this is mostly tactical places to keep most of his capturing equipment, for example his platform includes several rows with different kind of pokéballs. He also has a rare ability to calm Pokémon by making them remember their birthplace. He starts by spotting the Pokémon, and just by that he knows where it comes from. He then proceeds to pull out a small piece of ammo consisted by soil from the Pokémon's birthplace, and loads it into a special gun he carries. By shooting the ground the Pokémon is standing on, the feeling can calm the Pokémon in a matter of seconds.Noteworthy, he is the only character except Yellow who is not based on anyone from the Pokémon games, although a character appears in "Diamond" and "Pearl" with a somewhat similar appearance.Fact|date=June 2007

Diamond

firstmanga=nihongo|Diamond|ダイヤモンド|Daiyamondo is a character in the latest series of the "Pokémon Special" manga in Japan, based on the main male character from "Pokémon Diamond" and "Pearl". His appearance is based on the Diamond and Pearl Male character, Lucas. He started out with a Munchlax named Be. He is twelve years old.

Diamond is a good friend of Pearl and the pair form a Pokémon comedy duo, with Diamond acting as the boke (funny man) of the pair. Though seemingly dim-witted at first and possessing a perpetual habit of eating wherever he goes, Diamond is somewhat smarter than he looks. He stands up to foes in times of distress, and has been shown to be observant in a mishap involving wild Bidoof.

Due to a mix-up, Diamond believes that he and Pearl are on a reality television series; if they successfully escort Ms. Berlitz to Mt. Coronet, they will receive a prize. Berlitz, believing the duo to be her bodyguards, gives them Pokédexes, Pokétches, and starter Pokémon from Professor Rowan. Diamond receives a Turtwig from her and nicknames it Rū. Rū has now evolved into a Torterra. He has also recently obtaind a Shieldon name Puu.

Pearl

firstmanga=nihongo|Pearl|パール|Pāru is a new character from Sinnoh and one of the three leading characters in the Diamond and Pearl arc of Pokémon Adventures.

Pearl has a hasty personality and a habit of butting into coversations along with exploding with rage if a person does not give him eye contact when he speaks to them. He and Diamond are friends, though Pearl is known for frequently getting them into trouble. Together, they form a Pokémon comedy duo with Pearl acting as the tsukkomi (straight man) of their duo.

Because of a mix-up, he and Diamond think that escorting Ms. Berlitz to Mt. Coronet is part of a reality television show and by accomplishing this task, they will win a prize. Berlitz, believing the duo to be her bodyguards, gives them Pokédexes, Pokétches, and starter Pokémon from Professor Rowan. Pearl receives a Chimchar, which he nicknames "Saruhiko", from Berlitz, which has evolved into a Infernape. Along with Chimchar, he also has a Chatot name Perahiko.

He is based on the rival character from "Pokémon Diamond" and "Pearl".

Platina Berlitz

Platina Berlitz comes from a 200-year old family of wealthy scholars famous in Sinnoh and wears pearl and diamond rings. She does not give her name to commoners; therefore, Berlitz's given name was previously unknown. However, with the impending release of Pokemon Platinum in the latter half of 2008, it has been widely anticipated her name will be revealed as "Platinum." On in official materials, she is referred to as nihongo|Ojyousama|お嬢さま|Ojōsama|roughly translated as "m'lady". She is somewhat spoiled, but is a talented trainer.

The Berlitz family tradition is for members coming of age to travel to the peak of Mt. Coronet to obtain materials to make their personal family crest. At the suggestion of Berlitz's butler, Sebastian, her father hired two body guards to protect her in her journey. Professor Rowan provided her with three Pokédexes, three Pokétches, and three of his starter Pokémon so that Berlitz would share them with her bodyguards to assist him in his research.

She owns the Piplup and a Ponyta. Her Piplup has now evolved into an Empoleon. Also, she is known to enter many competitions, such as Super Pokemon Contests and battling gym leaders.

Both Berlitz and the character, Dawn, from the Pokémon anime, were inspired by the female character of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.
