- Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School (Glenn Heights, Texas)
Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School is a public school in Glenn Heights, Texas (USA). It is part of the DeSoto Independent School District.
Located at 1500 Majestic Meadows Drive in the Kingston Meadows subdivision, the school opened in August 2007 as the district's third middle school, serving six through eighth graders living in the far-western and southwestern portions of DeSoto as well as the Dallas County portion of Glenn Heights.
The campus sits on 25 acres (100,000 m2) near the intersection of Bear Creek Road and Cockrell Hill Road. The building is approximately 171,000 square feet (15,900 m2) in size and features a two-story academic wing, student study lounge, and outdoor access to a community room complete with kitchen facilities.
The funds to build the school were approved in a 2005 bond election. To coincide with its opening in August 2007, a district-wide grade realignment plan that converted the two existing junior highs into middle schools and the two intermediate schools into the district's sixth and seventh elementary campuses.
Over 25 suggestions for the new campus name were received from the community. The name Curtistene S. McCowan was selected and approved by the school board on January 22, 2007.
McCowan, a retired Federal Trade Commissioner, became DeSoto ISD's first African-American school board trustee in 1990. She went on to serve two three-year terms, two of those as president.
She currently serves as a member of the DeSoto Economic Development Corporation, the DeSoto ISD Education, and is president of the Concerned DeSoto Citizens entity.
Most of the students from Frank D. Moates Elementary attend McCowan Middle School as well as a substantial number of students from Amber Terrace, Cockrell Hill, and Woodridge elementaries. A small number of students from Ruby Young Elementary also attend McCowan.
