USS "Jubilant" (AM-255) was an "Admirable"-class minesweeper built for the
U.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in theAtlantic Ocean and was reactivated during theKorean War .History
"Jubilant" was launched
20 February 1943 byAmerican Shipbuilding Co.,Lorain, Ohio ; sponsored by Mrs. C. D. Bishop; and commissioned27 August , Lt. (j.g.) W. P. Sprunt in command."Jubilant" departed Lorain
13 September and steamed viaQuebec andArgentia, Newfoundland forLittle Creek, Virginia . While sailing along the Atlantic coast, she made asubmarine contact,23 October and launched adepth charge and hedgehog attack which resulted in a probable hit. Arriving Little Creek the 23d, she commenced 4 months of minesweeping and escort training, then departed1 March 1944 forconvoy escort duty in the South Atlantic.She arrived
Trinidad ,British West Indies ,12 March and departed the next day as escort for aconvoy bound forRecife, Brazil . Arriving26 March , she proceeded toRio de Janeiro andBahia, Brazil before returning to Trinidad30 May "Jubilant" made several escort voyages between Trinidad andBrazil ian ports and engaged in coastal minesweeping operations before departing Trinidad23 March 1945 for theUnited States .Reaching
Norfolk, Virginia ,29 March she conducted minesweeping operations in theChesapeake Bay until departing30 April for convoy duty along the eastern seaboard. On17 May she returned to Norfolk and resumed minesweeping operations. Serving as a minesweepingtraining ship , she continued her duty out of Norfolk until4 March 1946 ; then she departed forOrange, Texas . Arriving11 March , "Jubilant" decommissioned18 May and joined theAtlantic Reserve Fleet .In order to bolster the fleet during the
Korean conflict , "Jubilant" recommissioned11 May 1951 . Departing24 May , she steamed toCharleston, South Carolina , to join Mine Squadron 8, Atlantic Fleet,29 May For more than 2 years "Jubilant" operated out of Charleston along the Atlantic coast up to theChesapeake Bay .She cleared Charleston
19 February 1954 and returned to Orange the 28th. "Jubilant" decommissioned27 April and entered theAtlantic Reserve Fleet . She was redesignated MSF-255 on7 February 1955 . Subsequently, "Jubilant" was stricken from theNavy List 1 May 1962 .Transferred to
Mexico 1 October 1962 as "DM-01" (D 1); renamed and reclassified ARM "Riva Palacio" (C-50); and, sunk offVeracruz, Mexico , in August2001 as anartificial reef .References
