August 13 ,1936 ,The Hague –July 15 ,2007 ,Amsterdam ) was a Dutch politician for the Netherlands Labour Party. His parents wereConny Patijn , himself a member of the Netherlands Labour Party, and Sara van Citters. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Schelto van Citters. He graduated from the University of Utrecht in 1959 with a law degree. He earned a doctorate from the University of Utrecht in 1973 with a dissertation on the European Parliament ("Het Europees Parlement, de strijd om zijn bevoegdheden").Patijn became a member of the
European Parliament in 1973. He took up the post theQueen's Commissioner for the province ofSouth Holland in 1984. Patijn was best known for being themayor of Amsterdam , serving from 1994 to 2001.Patijn married Elisabeth Stroink on 12 July 1961. The couple had three children. Patijn died of
cancer on July 15, 2007. His father outlived him by a few months, until his own death on September 7, 2007 at the age of 98.
