Osh State University is the largest and the oldest university in southern Kyrgyzstan. Located in the historic city of Osh, it was founded in 1992 as a reorganization of the Osh Pedagogical Institute, which was founded in the early 1950s. 27,000 students, including 1500 international students, study at the university. Instruction is offered in both English and Russian. There are about nineteen cultural and study centers in the university founded by many international organizations, embassies, etc. There are two professional medical schools and one kindergarten affiliated with OSU.
OSU is a member of the European Association of International Education and International Association of Universities. Trainings are conducted on 76 specialties in 10 languages; on 24 specialties OSU has joined the world catalogue of universities. With regards to international focus, OSU has also been active in collaborating with programs such as NISSCUP, IREX, ACCELS, DAAD, INTAS, CEP, TEMPUS-TACIS and cooperates with more than 90 higher education institutions, various foundations, public sectors, embassies and diplomatic representatives of foreign countries around the world. Today about 100 OSU students study in the USA, Germany, Turkey, Japan, Southern Korea in the framework of different international educational programs. 14 OSU graduates study at Master’s level programs, 6 post-graduates are in doctoral studies programs leading to PhD degrees from such countries as the USA, Germany, Canada, Turkey and Pakistan.
The university has more than 1,000 modern computers, of which 152 are connected to the Internet. OSU also has its own media resources: a well-equipped TV studio UMUT, a monthly newspaper NUR, and a printing office.
OSU has 23 study buildings, 9 dormitories and a hostel for foreign teachers. Aiming the overall concern about students, teachers and university members, OSU has owned a health resort on the shore of Issyk-Kul lake and a recreation base on the bank of the Ak-Bura river. There is also a health center which works all year round.
