Isard's back story is established in the "
Tales From the New Republic " series. One of the most powerful figures in the Galactic Empire, Isard is a ruthless and cunning woman, earning her the nickname Iceheart among her subordinates. She is a native ofCoruscant , only daughter of Armand Isard, then the Director of Imperial Intelligence. Perhaps realizing how dangerous his daughter is, the elder Isard tries to have her killed as she moves up rapidly through Imperial Intelligence ranks by dispatching her on a mission toDarkknell to retrieve the stolen datapads containing the plans of the firstDeath Star . She survives, but fails to recover the datapads. She soon realises why her father sent her on that mission, and implicates "him" in the theft of the Death Star datapads and the bombing of the Treitamma Political Centre (anassassination attempt uponGeneral Bel Iblis ). She then has her father executed.Ysanne Isard is promoted to the recently vacated position of Director of Imperial Intelligence. While in this position, she takes command of the Super Star Destroyer "
Lusankya ", whichPalpatine had secretly buried deep beneath the cityscape ofCoruscant . Isard uses the "Lusankya" as her private prison, where she keeps captured Rebels to be brainwashed intosleeper agent s. After the death of Palpatine and the defeat of the Empire during theBattle of Endor , she allies herself with Palpatine's immediate successor,Grand Vizier Sate Pestage, who had assumed command of Imperial Centre and Imperial Oversector 0. Later, Isard allows him to be captured by the New Republic atBrentaal , and arranges for his death. The Ruling Circle of Imperial officials assumes command, but she has them murdered. She then assumes command of Coruscant, but her rule is threatened by both rivalwarlord s and the New Republic.Imperial leader
In the "
Jedi Prince " series, the appearance ofTrioculus , acon artist posing as Palpatine's son, threatens her reign. While he is too weak militarily to challenge Isard directly or to attempt to capture Imperial Centre, Trioculus wins the allegiance of a considerable portion of theImperial Starfleet , and at one point is even recognized as the legitimate ruler of the Empire by the Prophets of the Dark Side. Isard devotes considerable resources to undermining the pretender, isolating the moffs who lent him their support in an attempt to prop him up as a puppetdictator . Finally, she uses her Grand Admirals to destroy the Prophets themselves when they attempt to usurp her rule.In "
The Bacta War ", Isard coerces General Evir Derricote and his scientists off the planet Borleias and onto Coruscant, where they create theKrytos virus that only targeted non-human races; the strategy is to strain the New Republic's resources by forcing them to deal with the problem. The Krytos virus is specifically engineered to incapacitate and kill thousands to maximize terror and exploit inter-species tensions within the New Republic as a variety ofeconomic warfare . She then flees Coruscant onboard the "Lusankya", which tears off a large part of Coruscant's cityscape, killing millions. She heads to thebacta -rich world of Thyferra, taking it and its bacta assets; while her agent on Coruscant (Kirtan Loor ) continues his guerilla war, she, having seized control of the galaxy's bacta supply (which is necessary for treating the Krytos virus), proceeds to raise the price of bacta astronomically. Isard reaps a windfall profit from the New Republic, which has to buy the bacta for the victims to formulate a cure. She later fightsRogue Squadron in theBacta War , during which the "Lusankya" is captured. Isard, along with a clone of herself, escapes and scatters the prisoners. After Thyferra
In "
Isard's Revenge ", the clone comes into the service of Prince-Admiral Krennel, while the real Isard commandeers a secret Imperial base and go into hiding, resurfacing to help the New Republic retrieve the missing prisoners from Prince-Admiral Krennel.Fearing execution for
treason after being contacted by a resurrected Palpatine onByss , the real Isard plots to retake "Lusankya" in order to present it to the Emperor and be reconciled for her failure. Anticipating her treachery, Iella Wessiri shoots Isard dead during the attempt to repay for the death of Iella's husband Diric.
