The All-Ireland Hurling Championship 1989 ran from May to September of that year. The All-Ireland Hurling Final was won by Tipperary who beat Antrim by 4-24 to 3-9.
All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The Munster and Leinster championships were played as normal with the winners Tipperary and Offaly going through to the All-Ireland semi-finals along with Galway, the only Connacht team. The Ulster champions Antrim had to beat Kildare in a preliminary game to reach the All-Ireland semi-finals.
The All-Ireland hurling semi-finals were played as a double-header in Croke Park. Antrim caused something of a sensation in the first match by beating Leinster champions Offaly by 4-15to 1-15, in doing so reaching only their second All-Ireland final and first since 1943.
The second semi-final was between Tipperary and Galway - a rematch of the previous year's final which Galway had won. In a tight tussle Tipperary gained revenge on the Tribesmen by winning 3-13 to 1-9.
Final
In contrast to the semi-finals, the final itself was a poor affair as stagefright overcame the Antrim team and the match gradually drifted into a non-contest, Tipperary finally winning by an eighteen point margin 4-24 to 3-9. Nicky English scored a remarkable 2-12, the highest score ever by an individual in an All-Ireland final. Bobby Ryan (Borisileigh) received the cup for Tipperary's first All-Ireland hurling title since 1971.
