Giovanni Maria delle Piane

Giovanni Maria delle Piane (1660 - 28 June 1745) was a leading court painter for over 60 years in the late-Baroque period. He is also known as "il Mulinaretto".

Giovanni Maria delle Piane was born in Genova, Italy and trained in Rome with a Genovese, Giuseppe Paravagna. He painted several portraits for the Doria family and several portraits for the European nobility. He was court painter to the Farnese at their courts at Parma and Piacenza and later to the Bourbons at Naples. He had a relationship with Princess Elizabeth Farnese, the wife of King Phillip V of Spain and the mother of King Charles III of Spain. The painter's artwork is conserved in the Royal Palace of Madrid and in Caserta Palace's collection of royal family portraits. He was esteemed for his distinguished art like Godfrey Kneller and Anthony Van Dyck in Italy.

His son, Giovanni Andrea, (died 1759) was a painter of portraits.
