USS "Augury" (AM-149) was an built for the
U.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in thePacific Ocean before being given to theSoviets under theLend-lease program.She was laid down on
7 December 1942 atTampa, Florida , by theTampa Shipbuilding Co., Inc.; launched on23 February 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. Helen K. MacLean; and commissioned on17 March 1943 , Lt. A. G. Wood,USNR , in command.World War II Pacific Theatre operations
After fitting out, "Augury" completed shakedown training out of
Little Creek, Virginia , during the month between8 April and8 May 1943 . On10 May , she got underway as part of the escort for aconvoy bound for the west coast. She and her charges arrived in thePanama Canal Zone on19 May , transited thePanama Canal soon thereafter, and continued on up the western coast of North America. The minesweeper entered port atSan Francisco, California , on2 June and remained there until the 22d. Resuming her journey on the latter day, she shaped a course forAlaska n waters. "Augury" arrived atKodiak, Alaska , on29 June and reported for duty withTask Force (TF) 91. For the remainder of her career with the United States Navy, the minesweeper plied the waters surrounding theAleutian Islands escorting ships between such ports asKodiak ,Dutch Harbor ,Adak ,Amchitka ,Attu ,Shemya Island, andChernofski and conducted minesweeping operations in the bays, inlets, and passes along thearchipelago .Transfer to the Soviet Navy
On
23 June 1945 , "Augury" began four weeks of familiarization training for a crew ofRussia ns in preparation for thewarship 's transfer to theSoviet Union . On18 July 1945 , "Augury" was decommissioned and simultaneously transferred to theSoviet Navy under the terms of thelend-lease program. Commissioned as "T-524", she was retained by the Soviet Union indefinitely. Her name was finally struck from the Navy List on1 January 1983 .References
