USS "Bond" (AM-152) was an built for the
U.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in thePacific Ocean before being given to theSoviets under thelend-lease program.She was laid down on
11 April 1942 atPortland, Oregon , by theWillamette Iron and Steel Works ; launched on21 October 1942 ; and commissioned on30 August 1943 , Lt. Cober L. Grabenhorst,USNR , in command.World War II Pacific Theatre operations
Following shakedown training, the minesweeper engaged in patrols out of
San Pedro, California , from2 October to20 November . On the latter day, she got underway for theHawaiian Islands and arrived atPearl Harbor on the 30th. The minesweeper remained there until7 December when she shaped a course forAlaska n waters. She arrived atAdak, Alaska , on13 December and began patrols and escort duty. Over the next six months, her assignment took her toAttu ,Kiska ,Dutch Harbor , andAmchitka as well as Adak. The ship departed Dutch Harbor forSan Francisco, California , early in the summer of 1944. Following repairs at San Francisco, "Bond" put to sea on8 August , bound for theMariana Islands . She made stops at Pearl Harbor and atEniwetok Atoll before arriving atSaipan on2 September . For the next seven months, "Bond" patrolled in the vicinity of Saipan and escorted convoys between Saipan,Ulithi ,Guam , and Eniwetok. Thewarship left Saipan on25 April 1945 and, after steaming via Eniwetok and Pearl Harbor, arrived at Portland, Oregon, on22 May .Transfer to the Soviet Union
Following repairs - both at Portland, Oregon, and at
Seattle, Washington - the minesweeper moved north toCold Bay, Alaska , where she was decommissioned on17 August 1945 and was transferred to theSoviet Union under alend lease agreement. Commissioned in theSoviet Navy as "T-285", she was retained by the Russians indefinitely. The U.S. Navy carried her on its Navy List for almost 40 years, even redesignating her MSF-152 on7 February 1955 . Her name was struck from the Navy List on1 January 1983 .References
