Rosanne Cash (born May 24, 1955) is an American country music singer-songwriter and occasional author, who is known for her string of Top 10 country hit singles in the 1980s. She is also known as one of the daughters of country music singer, Johnny Cash and his first wife Vivian Liberto Cash Distin.

Although she is classified as a country singer, Cash blends the elements of Rock, Blues, Pop, and Folk into her music. This type of the blending could be seen Cash's most popular albums and singles, including "Seven Year Ache" (and an album of the same name), "Rhythm & Romance", "King's Record Shop", "Interiors", and the "The Wheel". She acquired eleven #1 hit singles on the Billboard Country Chart during the 1980s, as well as four additional Top 10 hits.

Early life

Rosanne Cash was born in Memphis, Tennessee, United States in 1955, around the time when her father's career was beginning. Music career

1978 – 1980: Early music career

She recorded her self-titled debut album for Ariola in 1978, but it was never released in the United States. Cash recorded the album in Munich, Germany and was not happy with the end result. She found that the producers put stiff arrangements on Cash's songs for the album. However, the album attracted the attention of Columbia Records's Rich Blackburn, who offered her a recording contract, and allowed her to make an album in her own musical direction. During the same time, she met and married Rodney Crowell, a young singer-songwriter, who would later serve as a producer for Cash's first album under Columbia. During this time, she also dealt with drug problems, including cocaine.

She released her American debut album, "Right or Wrong" in 1979. The album produced two Top 20 hit singles. The first single, "No Memories Hangin' Around" was a duet with country singer, Bobby Bare, followed by "Couldn't Do Nothin' Right," both of which were written by Rodney Crowell. The third single, "Take, Take Me" peaked within the Top 25 in 1980.

1981 – 1989: Breakthrough

Cash released her second album, "Seven Year Ache" in 1981, and was considered her commercial breakthrough. The title track peaked at #1 on the Billboard Country Chart, and also crossed over to the Billboard Pop Chart, peaking at #22. The album spawned two additional #1 country hits with "My Baby Think's He's a Train" and "Blue Moon with a Heartache." The album was eventually certified "Gold" by the RIAA. Cash's third album, "Somewhere in the Stars", released in 1982, was rushed due to her pregnancy that year. The album spawned two additional Top 10 hits with "Ain't No Money" and "I Wonder." The album was considered less successful then its predecessor, since it did not spawn any #1 hits. The album spawned two #1 hits, with "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me" and "Never Be You", originally covered by Tom Petty. The album drew high critical acclaim for its mix of Country and Pop music. "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me" later won her a Grammy award for "Best Female Country Vocal Performance". The album's other two singles, "Hold on" and "Second to No One" both peaked in the Country Top 10 in 1986.

Her fifth studio album was 1987's "King's Record Shop", which featured Rodney Crowell as the producer of the album again. The album also gained critical acclaim for its return to traditional country music. The album spawned four #1 hits between 1987 in 1988, including a cover version of her father's "Tennessee Flat Top Box," and also became Cash's second album to receive a "Gold" certification by the RIAA. The album's additional three #1 hits included a cover version of John Hiatt's "The Way We Make a Broken Heart" and "If You Ever Change Your Mind," which was co-written by Cash.

In 1988, Cash recorded a duet with her husband titled, "It's Such a Small World", which was released only on Crowell's "Diamonds & Dirt" album, and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Country Chart the same year. Also in 1988, Cash was awarded "Billboard magazine"'s "Top Singles Artist."

In 1989, Cash released a compilation album of her hit singles from the 1980s. Included were two new songs that were released as singles, beginning with a cover version of The Beatles' "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party," which peaked at #1 in 1989 and became Cash's eleventh and final #1 hit. 1990 – 1995: Commercial decline

In 1990, Cash returned with her first studio album in nearly three years with "Interiors." It became the first album released by Cash to be produced by herself and received a Grammy award nomination for "Best Contemporary Folk Album." The album was Cash's last album under Columbia Records. After leaving the label, she did not release another album for three years.

1996 – present: New beginnings

After signing with Capitol Records, she released her first studio album in three years, "10 Song Demo" in 1996, which was composed of ten new songs, with nearly no studio sound effects. The album did not chart and did not release any singles. In 2002, Cash was ranked at #22 on CMT's television special of the "40 Greatest Women of Country Music."

In 1996, Cash released a book of short stories entitled "Bodies of Water". This was followed in 2000 by a children's book entitled "Penelope Jane: A Fairy's Tale", which included an exclusive CD single, and in 2001 she edited the collection "Songs Without Rhyme: Prose By Celebrated Songwriters". She is also an amateur painter whose work is featured in the booklet for her "Interiors" album. Her version of the John Hiatt song "It Hasn't Happened Yet" inspired the short story "No One's a Mystery" by writer Elizabeth Tallent. She has publicly expressed support for environmental causes and opposition to the Iraq War. Cash now lives in the Chelsea neighborhood in downtown Manhattan.

In 2003, Cash released "Rules of Travel" also under Capitol, her first studio album since 1996. The album took nearly five years to make. In 2006, she released her third Capitol album, "Black Cadillac." The album was created as a memorial to her father, Johnny Cash, her mother Vivian, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash. Personal life

Family

Cash married her first husband, country music singer-songwriter, Rodney Crowell in 1979. Their union produced three daughters: Caitlin, Chelsea and Carrie. They divorced in 1992. She married her second husband, John Leventhal in 1995, and together they have one son, Jakob. Cash's father married Vivian Liberto in the 1950s and then they divorced in the 1960s. He then married June Carter in the mid-1960s. June Carter's daughter, Carlene Carter, also a country singer who had success in the early 1990s, became Cash's stepsister. John Carter Cash is Rosanne's half brother.

Cash's father died in 2003; Her mother passed away in 2005.

Brain Surgery

On November 6, 2007, it was announced on her official website that Cash would undergo brain surgery in New York for a rare condition. She was diagnosed with Chiari I malformation, a congenital malformation of the skull that affects the brain and spinal cord. The surgery did not consist of removing a tumor. That year, she cancelled her final tour dates for her "Black Cadillac" tour. Rosanne Cash has been actively involved in promoting SOS Children's Villages since her father's passing in 2003.
