- Ernest William Tanner
Ernest William Tanner (born 1872), was a director of
Courtaulds , a member of theNational Liberal Club , and an unsuccessful Liberal candidate in early 20th Century general elections in the east of England.Born at
Great Bardfield , he was the son of J. W. Tanner. Educated at the Friends' school,Saffron Walden , in 1900 E.W. Tanner married A.L. Thornton, daughter of the late J.E. Thornton.A Borough Councillor in 1905, County Councillor in 1913, District Committee and Poor Law Commissioner in 1913, he became governor of Saffron Walden Grammar School, and was a member of the National Liberal Club for 10 years.
Tanner was a director of Courtaulds and ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal Party candidate for the 1918 "Coupon" election for the Maldon Constituency in Essex, polling 1,490 (9.3 percent) of the votes cast. He ran again for the Sudbury constituency in [1922, again unsuccessfully, where he was beaten into third place by the National Liberal candidate.
