Illuminating Engineering Society of North America

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America ( [http://www.iesna.org IESNA] ) is a non-profit, learned society founded in New York City on January 10, 1906. The Society's stated mission is to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and by translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public. Members of the IESNA are regarded as the top professionals in their industry and are globally respected for their knowledge. The IESNA is considered to be one of the most prestigious learned societies to be a member of in North America and is one of the most exclusive in North American as well, hence the low membership.

Publications

The IESNA is credited with over 100 publications on the subject of lighting such as The Lighting Handbook 9th Edition, the recognized authoritative reference on the science and application of lighting. Other publications include recommended practises for a variety of specific lighting applications such as Office Lighting, Sports Lighting, Outdoor Lighting and Lighting for Healthcare facilities. All IESNA publications are developed through collaborative committee work. The National Institute of Standards and Technology references several IES publications as references for Optical Radiation Calibrations. [cite web

The IESNA is a joint sponsor of ASHRAE Standard 90.1.

In addition, the society publishes LEUKOS, the journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Membership

The IESNA has about 9000 members worldwide, mostly in the United States, Canada and Mexico, although there are members in other countries. Members include engineers, Lighting Designers, consultants, lighting equipment manufacturers, sales professionals, electrical contractors, architects, researchers and academics.

Organization

Organizationally, the Society is divided into approximately 100 local sections serving major North American Centers.

Each year the IESNA holds an Annual Conference, various other conferences and participates in [http://lightfair.com Lightfair International] . Local sections usually offer lighting education classes and meet regularly to offer a technical program to its members.
