In May 1996, Community Broadcasting sold WUOY, WMFD and WBMS radio stations to a new company called Ocean Broadcasting. At this time, WUOY changed from 70s
rock music to rock from the 60s through the 90s but keptJohn Boy and Billy . [Kristina Bartlett, "WUOY-FM, WMFD-AM AND WBMS-AM / Stations Sold to Ocean Broadcasting; New Company Purchases 3 Wilmington Radio Stations," "Star-News", May 17, 1996. ]In 1999, WLGX began playing
smooth jazz such asThe Rippingtons ,Dave Koz andLarry Carlton along withR&B by Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder. [Rick D'Anjolell, "Scene 'N' Heard / Southern Culture on the Skids at Bessie's; New Radio Station Jazzes Up Wilmington's Airwaves," "Star-News", December 9, 1999.]On August 18, 2003, WUIN joined WPPG and became "The Penguin," described as "a different kind of bird" that played "the music you've been waiting for." For the next 2 years the station introduced an eclectic mix to its listeners. In late August of 2005, the Program Director and Music Director were relieved of there duties, leaving many to speculate about the future of The Penguin. Within a month Sea-Comm Media had replaced the veteran programmers with Beau Gunn, an untested, but music savvy 23 year old with no radio programming experience. The move payed dividends, as WUIN enjoyed the highest ratings since its inception. In this eclectic, independently programmed format, listeners will hear deep cut classics from the past, to new cutting edge musicians. Bluegrass, Jam, Rock, Folk, Hip-Hop, and Americana are all fair game. If its good music, it will get played. The Penguin celebrated its 5th Birthday Celebration with a concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Fans of the radio station enjoyed a sold-out concert by Tift Merritt and Chatham County Line.
In a move rare in the radio industry, the program "
Flamenco Café" relocated fromNPR stationWHQR to WUIN. [ [http://www.creativewilmington.com/member_detail.php?id=162 William Paco Strickland - William Paco Strickland - Creative Wilmington, NC - Member's Profile ] ]Original programs
